Hi guys, apologies for my 1st post being a cry for help but I'm really confused over this. I recently bought an 02 plate 748e from eBay, on getting it home (in the back of my van) I put it in the garage for the night and plugged in to the optimate battery conditioner. The following morning before going to work I thought I'd start the bike, but to no avail... The fuel pump would not whizz or prime, after a lot of fiddling with the relays I managed to get the pump to whizz, the bike started and that was that. When I returned from work I went out for a quick spin, started it up all ok and off I went, after 5-6 miles in to the ride the bike died and refused to start for 5-10 mins, all the time I was trying to start it the fuel pump whizzed as it should. When it eventually started again I was only able to ride approx 3 miles before it died again, ( it did this 5 separate times all the way home)! Each time it just died, no warning, no cough or splutter, then after 5-10 mins of trying it would fire up and run fine? When I eventually got home, annoyed I put it away in the garage, plugged in the optimate charger and left it. After a few hours I returned to the garage to find the battery fully charged (green lights showing on the optimate) however once again the same as the night before the fuel pump does not whizz or prime? Anyone got any ideas, I've got to admit I'm stumped!! I've no idea if the constant breaking down is related to the fuel pump not running when the battery is fully charged?? Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance, Phil
Did you use a new relay? That would be my first thing to replace. Not just swap for another on the bike.
As above check the relay and also if you have a fuel pump fuse under the seat area check that to see if it is making contact or not breaking down. I have had a fuse burn out like that once and although the bike just stopped dead if it's on it's way out or has a bad connection then you might experience the intermittent problem you mention. It's also worth checking the whole loom\connectors and the fusebox for and corrosion on fuses or terminals.
I had the same problem caused by an intermittently failing main relay, it's the yellow one near the battery. Also had the fuel pump fuse holder (under the seat) melt, it was actually still working but the holder and fuse were just a single 'glob' of plastic.
