Just replaced the cush drive rubbers that had started to back off and M/C the hub. Thought whilst I was at it I should remove axle and check the bearings for play. The bearing on the sprocket side (double ball) has a lot of play on the inner race, I assume there should be no play and therefore needs replaced? Just want to confirm prior to buying new bearings. Thanks.
This bearing should be a double row angular contact type and do feel very loose. The play is taken up when assembled with the axle. Test for yourself, clamp the two inner race halves together with your fingers and feel for play, should be none. If it does need replacing they can be tricky to find (SKF BAH-0062) and expensive. There are people out there that offer an alternative fitment of two adjacent standard bearings, not sure I'd want to do that.
