748 possible clutch issue???

  1. hi guys

new to this forum, but had my 98 748 for a few years

basically if i pull away from a set of lights normally there are no problems.

but if i pull away from a stand still with a bit more enthusiasm, there is a straining noise that runs through the bike.

its a 1998 with 14000 miles on the clock, its very well looked after, there seems to me plenty of meat on the plates, the basket is worn admittedly but its not terrible

    any help would be great.

  2. Quite often the clutch makes strange noise like that when it's clogged with dust, if you clean the plates and re assemble, chances are the noise will go away.

  3. thanks il give that a go tomorrow, just need some good weather now :/

  4. According to my man of knowledge Getting used to a dry clutch will always be a hit and miss affair especially on 996/748 models and the grinding sound is fairly normal....do you have an open clutch cover? I've yet to experience this on my 748 as I'm only half legal to ride her! But I'll tell you in a week or so if mine is the same!

  5. That would be great!! Its not really a grind its more of a straining noise,

no its a closed cover, makes sence with the post above!

    Cheers guys

  6. Mine does it on race starts every time, its a pain to get off the line really quickly. Getting the stack height right and making sure the dished plates are in the correct palce and correctly orientated helps. It sounds like cats being strangled...............

  7. Yeah you could benefit from an open clutch cover as it will blow all the dust out but if you want to keep your closed clutch cover as said above take it straight off and give it a good clean!
    This is mine!
