748 Problems

  1. Hi, I've broken my 748....can anyone help on diagnosing the problem....
Went for a ride around the Peaks for a few hours, all of a sudden it started to stutter when revving above 5000. Managed to gently ride it home by slowly lifting the revs (quite hard to do 2up). When I got home I found the reg was overcharging and boiled away half the battery ( so that has been replaced) but the revving problem carries on. Anyone got any ideas please.
    Thanks
    Jon

  2. You need to urgently check the yellow wires and the plug running across the engine joining the alternator with the regulator for signs of overheating/melting insulation. It's an all too common fault which if not caught early enough could result in a fire as the leads short out on the crankcase in absolute worst scenario. If all wires are fine then I would get the regulator output checked as it probably needs replacing.

  3. Thanks Chris...sorted the boiling problems, it is the not revving problem now that is the big problem.
    Thanks

  4. they can be linked Jon as said, if the normally smooth flow of current to all ancilliaries is being interrupted then this includes the ignition but could be a total coincidence of course. I really urge you to check as above just to be on the safe side. The problem nearly always starts at the block connector (which is just behind the black plastic battery housing) and you often find it won't unplug because male/female plugs are already welded together. The next stage is the yellow wires (2 or 3) will run warm and appear 'wriggly' to the eye. The final stage is detailed above.
