Just curious as i saw a 748 recently with the same carbon side panels with fasteners on the airbox is it just for show as i assume wasn't standard, 2001 Ducati 748 748cc Sports, Classic
I would imagine easy access, change belts without removing the tank and Air box?? Used more on race bikes.
Roadtrip, They are non standard and quite tastelessly affixed to the outside of the standard airbox side panels by the look of it. Its a MY01 748E Bip that has been faffed around with. Finish on the seat unit is a bit rough as well and it is likely a fibreglass replacement
Agree seat unit is very rough, I have a 748 and saw one with a mono tail seat and original ducati sub frame at a local bike meet with the same panels also fixed that way and after seeing this bike on eBay it got me thinking why is it like this, whats the reason for it.
Ian, if you look in the last photo you can see they are just for show and fixed to the red airbox skirts, that is why they stick out so much further than normal ones.
I wonder if the bottoms of the original red air box have been cut off, as you say Denzil , it's a heath Robinson job. Steve
I’ve some of them carbon airbox covers mine are carbon panels which just stick over the existing airbox looks ok I put mine on as some one had painted the airbox black so without repainting it I couldn’t get the black paint off and it wasn’t a good finish
Glen, on yours the panel fit is correct and the lines follow through so it works. The line, curve and detail of the 748/9x6/998 is one of its key aesthetics, if its not retained with aftermarket bits they look out of place.
I had them on my old bitsa. I cut the oem sides off, leaving just enough to add the fasteners. Remember the original 'race' CF air boxes where in three parts.
My aibox sides. The aibox originally was all in one so obtained a pair of sides and with a pair of fuzz fasteners and a bit of cutting job done. As said above ease of access especially when I can change the rear belt without having to remove air box and ancillary stuff.
