748 Sprocket carrier.

  1. Been having issues with the chain/sprocket setup, tension of the chain is right according to the book but still getting clicking, the sort of noise/feel you get when on a train so my thoughts being that the chain is on the way out as the bike was stored outside for quite a while. Did look at the alignment as it was making a similar sound as a push bike that is halfway though a gear change.

Looking at the cost of sprockets I was thinking of upgrading to a proper quick change sprocket carrier and had the STM in mind as it has "lips" to stop the cush drives damaging the eccentric hub. Something I have experienced first hand. (Although saying that I've seen some with lips and some without!)

Oh and a decent 96 link chain as I'll be going for a 14/40 setup, if I can pick up a good quality 525 chain then I might take that above the standard 520, a little extra durability never hurt.

Anyway, I know there are many sprocket carriers out there and my main focus should be finding one where I can easily get replacement sprockets at a decent cost. Was just wondering if anyone had any input/experience, ie is there a particular carrier to avoid as sprockets for it cost an arm and a leg?
Any to recommend, within a reasonable budget ( I know budget and Ducati don't really go together..) if at all possible I'd like to have a lump of metal between the cush drives and the eccentric hub.

Ah, just had a close inspection of the chain....
Prognosis... Lucky to be still in one piece, the split link was most definitely on its last legs, the roller was absent, the pin was down to half width and the hole in the side-plates had been elongated a fair amount. Now know where the clicking was coming from and probably explains my recent thrown chain...
Still, might as well go ahead with the sprocket melarkey.

  3. Did notice they have quite a bit for the 748 just missed out on a carrier on ebay it would seem. Balls.

  4. Most of the quick release carriers have the cush drive tabs these days, I can vouch for AFAM, sprockets are pretty cheap and are lasting pretty well on mine (9k on a hard anodized rear so far), I have posted a couple of times this week on the details. Hard anodized rears can be bought for £30 and steel fronts for £14 if you watch the listings, but the carrier was quite a bit more. I have to say someone on here was going through Renthal rears in <2.5k miles and has got rid of his set up and gone back to steel OEM ones, but I don't know his chain maintenance regime. Get the chain fitted fitted with a properly rivetted link and if you don't have the right tool it is an easy job at a local bike bike shop.
