Wonder if anyone might help advise as I might have to unfortunately let my 748SPS go and want advice as to value if poss. Because of the rarity of the SPS and others like the SP and R it's difficult to compare against other bikes on the market. It's a Feb 1999 bike with 15k 4 owners and main dealer history 5 stamps. The last service was actually at Cornerspeed Ducati 500m ago and was belts/shims/one rocker. Immaculate bike, it's been cherished. I can't see one for sale anywhere at present as nice but maybe others know what they've been fetching?
i was thinking round that level myself tbh. the 748 SPS unfortunately arent at the high levels the 996/998 are getting to for whatever reason but they are rare bikes compared to the run of the mill. daft question, where do people sell bikes these days? i've always tended to trade in against something newer at a dealer, i havent sold privately. Assume no test rides without full cash in hand!
Sounds like a travesty for it to be going for not much more money than a standard biposto. Would be easy enough to put it up on the classified section here as a free of charge punt, nowt to lose. Same goes for other Ducati forums such as Ducati Up North, etc. Not sure if the Visordown forum charges for ads these days, not been near there for several years. ebay and MCN are other places to try, but obviously a bigger fee goes with that. If it is as immaculate as you say, then lots of photos, from general overview toclose-ups of engine, suspension, brakes, etc will all help, and it will likely go pretty quick. Good luck with the sale. Pete
I have one of only 20 genuine SPS UK models produced and sold in the 1999 model year. I have full provenance and my bike has only done 10,000 miles from new. I have receipts etc. but because of it's low mileage it has had little in the way of servicing as it has been stored for periods of time. I have the genuine original Termignoni exhausts and chip that came with this bike new along with the paddock stand and a set of standard exhausts\chip. I also have the originally provided Yellow dust cover although it is useless pretty much now as pure age has taken it's toll, and they were nothing more than an overgrown Yellow J cloth type of material that was used and that deteriorates after only a few years. If I ever did decided to sell mine I would be happy if it made £5,000 because although these bikes are rare it seems they are only sought be a certain type of person and they seem a bit thin on the ground. Like many things including bikes\cars they are worth what people are prepared to pay. If you got £6,000 for it I would say you were doing very well. If it's not a UK model and a number were\are not as a lot of these were imported over time or you do not have full provenance then I think that figure would be harder to achieve. Bear in mind that it's quite hard to tell a genuine SPS and not that difficult to disguise an ordinary Bip model to look like the genuine article.
Yea I understand entirely. Mine is also one of the 20 bikes from 1999. I've got the paddock stand but not the dust cover unfortunately. Mine also has been stood for periods but has at least had 5 major services and the shims done regularly along with one rocker that was showing signs of chrome fatigue. I think you are right that for some reason they don't seem to attract as much general attention when it comes to selling.
Parking up at a bike meet with a for sale sign couldn't hurt, and you get to go to bike meets. Do a little laminated advert with your mobile number on it.
I completely rebuilt my SPS including the engine after I bought mine and despite it only having done 10,000 miles I had to replace 5 rockers and also the clutch pushrod which had broken in half. On top of that the flywheel nut was loose but had done no damage and the connector to the alternator was on the way out and was melting through. It's a great bike to ride, but after building my hybrid 748R engined 748S which uses a stock non R air box and ordinary 748 injectors I have to say it is a better and quicker bike with exactly the type of revability the SP and SPS are known for. I did have to have it custom mapped by CJS though, so I expected it to be better as the map has accurate fuel parameters and also a rev limit on the chip. I built the whole bike for £3500 plus the cost of having it mapped, less than I paid just to buy my SPS.
