I took the 748r out for a spin earlier to Swansea then back to Brecon, then home. but as I got it out of garage I noticed that over the winter the clutch springs have gone rusty and could do with replacing. the question is are the springs in my 748R standard slipper clutch the same as the springs in a normal 748? As I've seen these for sale on eBay in stainless, though it doesn't say weather they suit the R model? thanks Rich
Thats a good question , springs can have different ratings , they also lose strength after time ,if they are o.e. springs from when the bike was new ,then why not replace with stainless ,you'd fell the difference straight away if they were loads different. I changed to a slipper clutch on my 999 and retained the o.e. springs ,so I dont think a sipper clutch makes any difference.
Rich, just checked the parts books and FWIW they only list conventional clutches on the 748s and the clutch spring part numbers for the 748 and 748R are different, however the part numbers for the conventional clutch springs on the 748R, 996, 996SPS and 998 are the same. I thought the standard R clutch had a lightened basket but was otherwise similar but it seems to have few common part numbers with the other 748s.
Thanks for the replies gents! i shall look into getting a set of 996 style springs in stainless then.
I have a STM slipper on my 748 and have recently put the standard stainless springs in with no ill effect, just a slightly lighter clutch lever. Steve
