Seems to be a few of these going on this section... Anyway going home from work after a shit day lead to this at 2am in the morning... Running one cylinder, EML came on with above code. Seems to be intermittent as before loaded I tried it again, and EML went off and bike was fine. Did a search and it's " Hor. Coil shorted to earth" . Looks that I need to check for corrosion on the coil due to wet weather, but it hasn't been out in any. I did give it a sponge bath last week... Anybody else had troubles with this?
Hi Peter, always the man in the know Are we talking about the ones behind the battery box? PITA getting to those.
Yes mate, the fuel pump relay and injector relay, see if there is any corrosion there , Your 749 is the earlier model and there were issues with the coil packs which should have been replaced under warranty. You could check the resistance on the coils with a volt meter, instructions for that could be in your user manual. But before I'd check all connections and earths from coil pack back. You are getting a weak spark so it must be an electrical problem.
Fuel pump relay should be fine, have it wrapped up in a rubber glove etc, will have a look at the others. I recently changed the battery, coinkidink?
Alright, took it out to have a look and the coil cylinder had some gunk and rust on it, so cleaned that and put it back in. Must of been cranking it too much and flooded the engine as it wouldn't start. Gave it 20mins and finally got it started. Light has gone off and I let it run till about 50 degrees. Problem seems to have cleared up but I don't trust it. I'll get my hands on a volt meter tomorrow and test it. Thanks guys
If your coil turns out fine Yets, look in the relay you've covered with the rubber glove,if it's been sweating then condensation could be the problem.
The spring inside can work loose and break the contact. I replaced my coil with a second hand one and every so often I put a squirt of wd40 in to drive out any moisture. its been alright for the last 4 years.
I'll be looking at both on Tuesday, maybe calling into Protwins! Quick question mind; I'm not sure if it's me or the bike but when started without fast idle the bike turns over at under 1k for about 10 seconds then powers on to idle at 1.2k. Is this normal? Not really noticed it before...?
So, problem came back, even after cleaning coil thoroughly. Riding to work, 12 miles in drop to one cylinder. Struggle for a mile then problem clears up for 20 secs. Does this one more time a mile down the road. Can I be sure it's the coil as I don't want to spend cash on it and find out that it's something else? Somebody on US forum thinks its ECU. I hope its not the ECU, if it is bike is getting sold...
Anybody have a newer coil spare? There a couple on eBay for a price a lot lower than dealer price, safe to buy even though used?
Yeah Yets they just plug in ,but is it not worth you giving Ducati UK a ring and finding out if you have or can get your coils done free or even at a percentage of cost as I'm sure the earlier ones were subject of a recall . A phone call wouldn't hurt even if it is now a redundant recall ,you might still get something .
To diagnose if the coil is faulty try switching them over. Put the horizontal on the vertical and vice versa. The fault should manifest itself on the vertical cylinder. I had this fault and ended up getting some coils for a later bike (with the fly leads) off eBay. Sorted the problem.
Cheers Peter. I wish I had thought of that! A bit late now as I've gone for the revised coil pack off ebay and seller has sent it first class. It's my primary transport and I convinced the missus in allowing me to get it if it's reliable! It's making my life difficult after 6 weeks of ownership! Thanks for the help. Will hopefully get coil tomorrow and if anyone is interested I'll post the results!
