749 intermittent fault – cuts out while riding & starting off

  1. Had a good ride to Matlock today, but, on the way back the 749 started to have problems.

It cut out when I came to a standstill at a junction. Know that this can be a problem, but, mine has not done this for years. Quick jab of the starer and it started OK, and pulled off OK.

A little further along the road, the bike would “surge” and lose power. Would not rev, would not pull. Then just as it coasts to a stop, it would fire up and go.

It then cut out and stopped. After a few attempts to start it, it fired up. But, the moment I put it in gear, it cut out.

It basically did this for the next 10 mile home.

Got home, left it 10 mins. It started OK, but, put it in gear and it cut out. Did this twice, then the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] time, it was fine when I put it in gear.

No idea if it’s part of the problem, or just coincidence, but, on the way back from Matlock I tried to use the built in lap timer thing. Never really used it, and the first time I do try it, I have problems with the bike. Doubt this is part of the problem, but, never had a problem with the bike before.

This is the first time the bike has let me down in 6 ½ years. At least it did limp home, and not leave me stranded.

First thoughts are the safety system linked to the clutch, side stand, neutral etc

So, what do I look at first? Or, do I methodically work through each switch & connection linked to the clutch, side stand, neutral switch etc etc

Could there be another reason for this fault?

  2. Clean every electric connectors, but first of all earth wire on ECU. Sanding paper + grease = no problems with wires... I had the same issue...
