Just a quick question just had a chat with friends about the stalling and one said that low battery and bad rectifer might cause stalls Ummmm any help
You've got a volt meter on your dash. 13.5 to 14v when running is rectifier ok. 12v with ign on only.
What are the conditions of the stalling? Low battery & poor rec cause starting issues and as suggested you have a volt meter on your dash so that would show an under or overcharge from the reg. A dodgy TPS or a TPS that is in need of a reset is the common cause. 03 & 04 grey swingarm versions suffered the most. When was it last serviced?
Its not something you want to be messing with if you dont know what you are doing. To me it sounds like it just needs a bit of a service and setup.
Yeah it's booked in next Monday,I've had nothing but trouble with it since I got it sorry to say I regret getting rid of my r1 for this no wonder the guy wanted shot of it I knew about the tps but there was a load more wrong with it back firing, not starting, cam timing out cam tension not set up or tight enough ,I've have had it just over a month and road it twice..also smell of petrol from the exhaust so far it's cost me nearly £567 well in garage and labour fees
Common issue the stalling as you stop, the idle is a bit low and needs to be raised by a couple of hundred revs, no cam chain its belts , if not tensioned correctly could jump a tooth and cause world war 3 , does your 749 have the std exhaust, could be running rich because of mapping , although IIRC my 999 ran slightly rich on the std exhaust . What have you had done for your money ? .
Never said cam chain,, cam timing when he put the belts on the timing was never done properly,,it has a termi end can all the money as been spent on people's suggestions ie get this do this and none of it as worked and I put it in the garage for a tps reset and still stalling so in next week at the main dealers more friggin money £55 per hour, I phoned ducati tech they recon its the spark plugs lol screw ducati going back to good old Jap I've only rode it twice..btw the bloke I got it from can see this and yes I'm not happy thanks all for your advice appreciate it.
Hang in there fella as it all sounds like it just needs a proper service and sorting. Did the bike come with a good service history, and by that Im talking receipts and not stamps in the book as they can be fake and dont tell you what has been done? I understand your frustration, hang in there as im sure it will come good. Keep us updated.
Sounds like most of the problem is injection setup. A TPS reset is the beginning of the setup. From there it needs balancing on the air bleeds. These are also used to set idle speed. Mixture is set by trimmer in software. Hours labour tops, but you need software and an exhaust analyser. The smell of fuel in the exhaust would make me think it was running too rich and back up having the setup sorted. which 749 is it? Reason being the 04 S's and onwards ran updated cams. These did suffer with stalling and as such mod'd cam timing tooling was issued to sort this out.
Even something relatively simple like the fuel filter needs changing,in many cases not done since the bike left the factory!
Sit tight. My first Duke was a 749s, it doene the same thing. Odd backfire, cutting out..BUT...it was sitting in a dealer for a few months, I got it serviced ( TPS and general checkover ) and it was fine after that. It ran a stock exhaust. Once its servided, bring it for a good long run for a couple of hrs. To be honest, they are a incredible bike. Let us know how you get on.
To all of you, it was me that swapped the ducati for the R1, for those on the site will have noticed that I put many questions for advice and had plenty of good responses which I say thank you to all of you. Since owning the Duc I spent hundreds replacing, fixing and I read all about the 749 in great detail before making my purchase and read all the advice from the forum before I attempted any work on the bike. When I swapped the bike I informed you about the tps and the fact she would not start tidy unless some choke was given and would only tick over if a bit of choke was left on, and yes she does cut out in traffic. I asked again for advice on the forum and it all pointed to the tps to be reset, I even replacd the fuel filter as a few said it might be the issue. Regarding the belts I new exactly what I was doing, again I used the forum and again was given good advice, yes I might have watched the video of the California bloke doing the belts, but it all worked out and started 1st time, since changing the belts I rode over 800 miles and the issue that raised its head was the poor starting. i and I repeat did not swap the Duc for the R1 under false pretensions, so saying no wonder the bloke new what he was doing I will not accept. I have been riding for 20 years and would consider my self experienced in both riding and mechanical knowledge of bikes. People who have had my bikes after me have all been happy with the condition of the bikes and all faults, niggles I have been upfront and honest making them aware of them, either photos, or visually and verbal. Yes forums are good for banter, advice etc but to say I swapped under false pretension is not fair. I swapped a 05 ducati with under 20k on the clock for a 2001 R1 with over 30k on the clock!!!!!!! I made sure again I read all about the r1 and the particular model in detail to ensure I knew exactly what to look at before making my mind up. Like i said on the day I did not really want to get rid of the Duc and you said the same about the r1. You had your reasons for swapping and I had mine. My rant is over for now :frown: hyabusa47

Ay up you two. Maybe have a discussion between yourselves or the thread will prob just get pulled and thats the end of it. Hayabusa47 might even be able to help you with some things so dont burn the bridge. Whenever ive sold bikes on ive always been happy to hear from the new owner and have a couple of times given them pointers and advice as owning these things sometimes needs a different perspective but everything is solvable. If its not running right that is one thing but I assume you were happy with the deal at the time so maybe consider the flip side of the coin? It could end up just being a simple adjustment that needs doing and thats part of owning one so dont fret as it will prob come good. Im sure some of the language is just a bit of frustration and worry because "its a ducati" and there is that perceived fear of something going wrong or buying a lemon. Dont give up on the bike as even Jap stuff goes wrong - just look on any forum and most of the complaints are very similar!
I would like to say that Simon ( Hyabusa47) is a fine fellow. He lent me his chain link tool when I needed one, didn't know me from Adam. I would say that is the mark of someone who is helpful! I too have a 2004 model 749s, and still have the occasional stalling issues. I would like to have Nelly work on my bike to try to rectify the stalling issue ,only thing stopping me from doing so is the distance . W4yneking72, don't get too frustrated mate, the 749 is a superb motorcycle, I have had mine for 4 years now, I'm very tempted to change it as there are so many other good bikes out there, but I just love riding mine. The good thing about them is you can really wring their necks and the handling, once set up correctly for you, combined with a good set of tyres is sublime.
Well folks my ducati dream is over had all the tps reset throttle bodies balanced co emissions done and still stalling that cost £389 then they done a compression test it was 75% and should be a least 120% so they took the top cylinder head off and found the rocker arm was broke and a collar ring on the shim £175 for the arm plus 3 hours labour at £55 so nit happy with my si called deal oh well this is a classic example of someone not looking after a ducati and I have paid the price. Thanks for all the info cheers
