749 temperature problem, sensor or ECU?

  1. Hi Guys,

I'm getting erratic temperature readings on my dash, at any temperature from cold to normal running the reading will spike up to 125 degrees instantly and then after a short time return to normal, then do it again off and on throughout the ride.

Does anyone have any experience of this? I've been told that there are two possibilities, one is the temperature sensor and the other is the ECU/clocks. Im planning to do the temp sensor in the next few days to try, if that solves it then great but if not then I'm looking at an expensive problem....

    Bike is a 2004 749 Bip

    Thanks in andvance

  2. Check the wiring connectors for corrosion, especially around earthing points.
Erratic behaviour usually points to either a faulty sensor or a bad earth somewhere which is affecting that sensor.

  3. Thanks antonye, i'll have a look at that around the sensor and ECU. If that turned out to be the issue i'd consider it a good result!

  4. Try the cheap route first. If you search 'Fiat Temperature Sensor' on eBay you should find a compatible sensor at a cheap price.

What version ECU? (IAW59M or IAW5AM)

I have a loan version of each that can be sent out for problem solving.

  5. I actually have a temperature sensor waiting to go in already which i should get to in the week. Im not sure off the top of my head which ECU it is i've got, i noted from one of your posts on another thread that being an '04 bike it could be either. Thanks for the offer of the loan ECU, i'll get back to you later in the week and let you know if i need to take you up on it! It would be very much appreciated:upyeah:

With any luck the list of jobs to do will get shorter rather than longer!

    Cheers

  6. Despite torrential rain and gale force winds the new temp sensor went in this afternoon and am very pleased to report normal temp readings from cold up until the fans kicked in. Unsurprisingly the fuelling was also significantly better! There is always the chance that the bike is just toying with me until i actually ride it but all conventional wisdom suggests its sorted.

In other news the immobiliser now recognises the key as the antenna had indeed simply dropped out of the clips holding it at the top of the ignition shroud and bizarrely, whilst re-fitting the battery, i found the rubber grommet that had got lost from the hole in the right hand side of the nose fairing where the side fairing fastens to it... I have no idea how it got there, its on the other side of the bike!

Anyway, all in all it's a good result and such a nice change for what you expect to be irritating and expensive jobs to turn out to be straight forward and cheap!

Thanks for the advice and offer of test ECUs, i noticed whilst warming the bike up with the fairings off that there is coolant weeping past the seal on what i think is the thermostat housing, so thats the next little job.

  7. Those rubber grommets are a pita. I lost one but fortunately my local dealership(Hyside) had some in stock and they're only about a quid. I slapped some silicon grease on mine to make easy on/off of fairing sides.

  8. Nice one - always good when it's simple things!
The ECU is really the hub of the whole electronics so it "knows" when anything else is wrong, but it can also behave strangely when other things are not working as expected!
