Hi all, new to the forum as recently purchased a 749s.Currently doing some required maintenance including belts which seems straight forward. Upon inspection however on one of the top cylinder cams it looks like the pulley and washer marks are off by 10deg or so which is if i go by the workshop manual should line up.All others do. Is this timing adjustment done previously by someone or has the washer slipped? thanks!!
When fitting the belts the cams are supposed to be locked using the factory tool 88713.1791. The screws securing the pulley to the hub are then loosened so that the tension can be set without a load on the belts from the closer springs trying to close the valves. Once the tension is set the screws are tightened. It shouldn't really matter if the dots line up as long as the cam timing is correct. I would imagine that the dots lined up is the factory default position at the centre of the adjustment range. However, some folk use the adjustable nature of the pulleys, along with a dial gauge on the valves, to optimise the cam timing to the factory spec, or even advance the timing slightly. In which case the dots won't be aligned.
