I have had the tank on my bike collapse due to an airlock which is not uncommon on the ssie I believe. The breather pipe is fine but it feeds to the outside of the cap on that aluminium ring that bolts to the tank, from there the air goes into a tiny hole where a sort of number 8 shaped rubber valve allows air through or shuts off to stop petrol coming back as is required (in theory). Having stripped the filler cap twice (and dealt with some of the tiniest springs on the planet) I still can't get this little valve to flow air. I am wondering has the rubber swollen doe to the petrol? Any ideas? Normally one for Al but I think I already asked him and he has the good sense to stick to carbs. Terry
If it is anything like the carbed SS breathers............. You should be able to blow through the valve into the tank fairly easily.............that's to prevent a vacuum forming....... You shouldn't be able to blow through the valve in the opposite direction easily if at all......that's to stop petrol sloshing out of the breather... (If there is a little arrow on the valve it should point away from the tank) A lot of the time it isn't the breathers that are buggered, but paint, rust and crap in the breather stub pipes........... Hi Al, Happy new year and all that! I have blown through pipes they are fine, I can't blow through filler cap with the little rubber valve fitted, if I leave it out the air flows through. The holes are very small, I am wondering if the filler cap is off an older SS which has a separate external breather and non return valve. Terry
Can't comment unless I can see the filler cap and the surround....... .....but even so, I guess the same principle applies........'air easy in - fuel hard out' With the carbed SS breather valve, the tank can build a little pressure up first, before it overcomes the resistance of the valve out........then it suddenly releases usually with a squeaky little fart........
Met up with some friends over Christmas I lost contact with for 25 + years, one of them has a 900ssie, since I have a 600ss I know what that one is like, I just need to check out my friends one...... next time I am in Anglesey! Good to talk to you Al, maybe we catch up in the New Year, still dying of man flu at the moment. Terry
I hope you can get your breather sorted ------ it appears that breathing problems are par for the course..... AL
