'81 Darmah Sd900 Speedo

  1. I have sourced a company which will prepare for me a new dial for my speedo, thus changing from MPH to KPH for use here in France.
They require me to scan at high res (600dpi) the existing dial for them to work from.
I have the speedo beside me on the desk partially stripped but I don't see how the "hand" / "needle" comes off .
This has to be removed so the dial can itself can be removed.
I had thought it may just be a push-fit but it appears to be much better engineered and given the unobtanium factor I am reluctant to proceed without a clear idea of what's required.
Any instrument mechanics out there able to help please :)

  2. I was recently searching forums on old speedos. One site (can't remember which) showed a guy dismantling one. The needle was a press fit onto the shaft and required very careful easing off by getting two screwdrivers under it and easing it off centrally. Looked like a very tricky operation without damaging the needle or the dial face. Yours may be the same. Best of luck!

  3. ARRRGGGHHHH, I was beginning to think along the lines of a special tool, merde! Thanks for the replies and will wait a bit before tackling. May even find a specialist and will post results.

  4. Thanks Borgo, Your video was blocked here for copyright reasons so I searched YT myself and found this:

which made it look really easy however before I try I'll wait for any other advice to come in.
    Watch this space

  5. This is the homemade special tool he used in the video you couldn't see. The 'box', slides under the needle so its shaft locates into the slot. The needle's central boss is then lifted with the 'box' as the wingnut is tightened. The feet of the puller are positioned over the screws that fasten the dial to the clock for added strength. upload_2019-2-26_19-48-40.png

  6. Success !
Half a bottle of Cotes du Rhone with lunch, hairdryer to put some heat into the hand hub, two-spoons method as in the video I posted except desert and not tea spoons and pressed more on the spoon bit and not handles. First I cut a cardboard (cornflakes box) protection and loosely tethered the needle with some Scottish so it didn't go to the dark side of the moon when it came off, like things always seem to do...

The spoon method works, together with the heat tip from "newtacho" who makes up new displays. Maybe the wine is optional...
    Thanks for the replies.
