821 Chain And Sprockets

  1. Time for a new chain and cogs

question is what should i go for? the OEM chain and its replacement about 18 months ago both had a tendency to rust at the merest hint of moisture, regardless of how well it was lubed.

i'm not to bothered about fancy colours, just something robust and reliable, I believe the OEM is a 525, with 15/45 teeth?

    what are your recommendations?

also has anybody here done this themselves? any handy hints i should know before getting the spanners out?

    thanks

    Dave

  2. While ill be in that boat soon a mate swears by AFAM. I personally will be going for a 530 DID chain set....a bit more heavy duty but should get a bit more longevity out of it...

  3. Will check out AFAM, cheers

530? Thicker/wider I guess? Does that require a different sprocket?

  4. Yeah - think so....i go riding with a lad (when im out on my RSV4) he had a chain snap on him 20 odd years ago which took the engine out (he says he was lucky not to come off) so from then onwards he always uses the heavier gauge chain (as ive not had to change one atall in the last 7 years or so) but its coming thats the direction im taking...

  5. AFAM chain and sprocket kit ordered from http://www.biketorqueracing.co.uk/

spoke to Chris on the phone after an initial email, see his comments below

"I would highly recommend the AFAM kit which I do have a listing for in my catalogue.
Ducati don’t actually do a 530 conversion. The 525 pitch chain is the highest they do on the their modern motorcycles so I would definitely recommend sticking with the standard 525 pitch chain.
This chain would be stronger than the DID equivalent. It’s a super heavy duty x ring chain (525 pitch, 108 link). Its one grade down from the strongest chain available from AFAM.

This kit is priced at £180.73 plus vat."

  6. I replaced the craptastic chain on my Scrambler with a D.I.D VX Gold chain and an alloy Renthal Sprocket. Mostly out of vanity but also because the standard chain stretched like an elastic band, even though I did try to look after it.
The DID chain was fantastic. I just kept it clean and kept a light coating of clear chain spray and after the first week, I never needed to adjust it! Looked amazing too and never rusted.

I'm going to get the exact same kit, except in Hyper SP spec again:

I assume the 821/939 are identical. The SP comes with slightly taller gearing if you're interested in dropping your cruising revs slightly. I can't say I've ever felt my bike doesn't pull hard enough!
The difference in weight between the Renthal rear sprocket and the standard steel one is very noticeable in your hand. Can't say I felt a step change on the bike but losing some unsprung weight can't be a bad thing.

  7. Not true mate, the Multi has a 530 pitch 108 link chain as standard, I have just replaced with a DID unit.
