Hi guys on way to work this morning noticed the red led for the alarm/immobiliser was stuck on got to work now the alarm/immobiliser will not engage then I noticed the display was still on but has now gone off but still will not engage can hear it keep clicking though?? Any thoughts?
I have a rule about when my bike starts behaving strangely. Change the 'coil/injector/fuel pump relay' On the 848 there are two relays on the right hand side of the battery box. The rear one is the coil/injector/fuel pump relay. This pesky blighter causes no end of problems. Only £1.90 off eBay, buy a spare or two.
Ok will check and think its just the alarm it's a Ducati one and the alarm box is making a weird constant noise??
I had a similar problem with a Spyball alarm. Turned out water had got into the box and water was shorting out the internal relays. There was verdigris everywhere. Solution was to remove it and reinstate the circuits that had been immobilised.
I know some insurers insist but i refuse to have an alarm. I had one once on an RSV and it destroyed batteries, went off all the time for no reason and ultimately failed completely in a similar fashion to yours. When i looked inside it an internal battery had leaked acid and destroyed the circuit board. Never again, if you have ever tried bumping a big twin as we had to in France due to the stupid alarm you will know what grief a flat battery is away from home. It's a common tale with lots of alarms on lots of bikes. Like chris said, rip the piece of crap out and problem solved. You still then have the factory immobilisor which is as much of a deterent as the alarm is. Neither will stop a proper crook. Failing that take a hair dryer to it and hope it's just water.
Finally got it started but still can't get alarm to engage looks like its getting ripped out lol But now have another prob on way home it started spluttering and then bogging out must have looked like my bike was having a fit lol feelins like something might be blocked any ideas where to look?
Most alarms control the feed to the fuel pump as a means to disable the bike so it may be connected. Is the dash charge voltage sensible when the bike is running ? (as in 14v ish)
You been out in a monsoon recently? Pull the coil sticks and give the plug recesses a blast out with air. Spray with water dispersant. Check out the relays by the battery box
Look between the oil cooler and radiator and you will see the Horizontal cylinder head cover (bronzy colour). In the center is a black plastic looking cap held by 1 bolt. That is the coil stick. If water has got in chances are it will be that cylinder but it's a squeeze getting it out with the rad etc fixed in place.
Firstly, I'm with Spoonz re: alarms. I know forums are the place for grumbles but I've never read about anything other than problems when alarms are fitted. Secondly, Spoonz, often wondered what that cap was for. Would I be correct in thinking that a 'coil stick' does the same job as a coil? Seems a daft question but I want to check
Pretty much, just a spark plug cap and a coil combined in one unit. Forgot to mention, smear some fresh waterproof grease on the seal if they are removed to keep the water out.
Just took the duke out for a spin as noticed that behind the front wheel the rad was capped in shit from all this crap weather and all seems to run fine, apart from the alarm, would cleaning the rad make a difference or not??
It probably just dried out but if you suspect it was the coil stick, grease it up or it wil happen again.
