Hi, having a mare with my 848 - running like a bag of spanners and mis behaving to the point where I'd happily ditch it at the mo.... Its only done 9k, and recently serviced (350 miles ago); the usual: plugs, filter, oil, replacement airbox due to spinning nuts and rear tyre. And it ran well. After a month of not being used, it now starts ok, but bit erratic/twitchy on the throttle; once warm doesn't want to rev above 5/6k but will splurge forward and then hesitate again - almost like running on 1.5 cylinders. Sound is slightly different, like its blowing - not crisp but a little flat? Throttle off, clutch in and it revs freely until loaded, had to slip clutch at junctions to get going; occasionally pops and TBH just an embarrassment to ride! Now, spoke to service person, who I have absolute faith in, and have replaced the original fuel filter and added fresh Esso Super unleaded fuel to no avail - still a bag of spanners. Runs around 81 degrees. Any suggestions would be appreciated; however, I'm no mechanic!! I tend to use the 848 as stress relief, but it’s having the opposite effect!! TIA R/R
Not quite RickyX, a spare airbox was very kindly donated by one of the very generous forum members on here and dropped off at the Donington Ducati day - otherwise it would have stayed put!! The belts were changed during this last service and have no warning lights showing.
Good to hear - great camaraderie on here! Sorry to have jumped to an incorrect conclusion! Sounds almost like a blocked/over oiled air filter? Something connected to the airbox replacement and disturbing of throttle bodies?
Or.... The reg/rec is breaking down. What voltage do you have at around 2000rpm?should be around 14.4V.
Thank you all for the kind and helpful suggestions. As said, I'm no mechanic, sort of lack faith than ability and lack of time. Now, Chrisw's blood pressure will probably increase over "Still have the EXBV and motor fitted?" - honest answer, I don't know. Yet to check voltage at 2k - so was wassed off with it, once cooled (848 that is, not me) it just got shoved away in disgrace. Didn't even take the kwack out cos might of wrung its neck and its front wheel isn't completely round at the mo (have a replacement round wheel waiting to go on)! The air filter should be fine as its done 300 miles with it installed and without issue - also had a new battery when serviced. I'll be phoning my service chap tomorrow but I know he's fully booked until mid-October!! I appreciate there are other good Ducati places (CelleirBVT) but I've no way of transporting it to Yorkshire - and I'm sure not riding the bloody thing until fixed. So, I may just have to be patient and bide my time (and save ££$$$!). And will do some research into the suggestions kindly offered. Thanks to all. R/R.
Yes, I have thanks, he's my nearest Ducati God and the only person to touch it! I took the tank over on Sat and he very kindly replaced the fuel filter whilst I waited - but being excellent means he's always booked. I'm only 25 mins away from him (depending on speed) but the bike is behaving so badly I cannot risk riding it that distance - for the bikes sake or mine for that matter. So, it'll be a collection jobbie I guess. Appreciate the suggestion El Toro
Well, I still have the original airbox - what's the best method to repair, if you can divulge that on the forum?
Just curious as to why a sticking/malfunctioning exhaust valve would cause the symptoms of the bike appearing to cut out on 1 cylinder
The symptoms as described are not dropping onto one cylinder. The reluctance to rev suggests a sticking EXBV causing restriction in the exhaust. Hopefully it is a quick and simple fix using some copper grease and sockets. If the OP removes the triangular cover mid-section on the right of the bike this will reveal the EXBV. It should cycle with ignition on and also move when revs are 3500-5000ish.
