Hi all, I'm looking to buy my first Ducati and have decided on the 848 Evo. I have read many posts around Stalling engines, gear selector problems and Regulator rectifier issues oh and also running really hot in traffic. However it occurred to me that most of these posts were in 2008 on launch year so I wondered if with the later EVO model if these seemingly common issues are now resolved? Any feedback from EVO owners would be great and I appreciate your time. I will be mainly using the bike for commuting between north Kent and London, with the odd track day and IOM trip, I know there would be better suited bikes for the job but I have always wanted a Ducati and the 848 Evo seems the easiest to live with. Does anyone else use theirs around London? I might be crazy, but I'm bored with Hondas Thanks in advance, Mark
I think you might be mixing some early 1098 issues with the 848. I have never heard of any inherent stalling issues or overheating on the 848 models except in cali where the evap cannistors caused problems. Some rads failed due to a weak bracket as per the 1098 etc also and there was a reg/rec update but not much else. The gear selector mis alignment was not an 848 issue specifically, the 1098 etc uses the same setup as far as I know. It required adjustment more than any part upgrade for most people. The 848 evo is really what it says an evolution and has some upgrades to aid performance and braking as well as emissions but no real "bug" fixes so to speak that weren't already applied to the 848 as it went through production updates.
I had a 848 Evo, 3k miles and never had any of the above issues apart from the heat which was a real issue on hot days in traffic! It's not the best commuter but you probably already know that! Some useful usability improvements are 14t sprocket for the front and Oberon clutch slave, both make it better in town. Also I found that a custom map to get rid of all the o2 sensor junk with the open pipes did help the heat issue a tiny bit, because the catalytic converters are under your arse on the standard bike. Otherwise no radiator issue, think that was solved pretty much mid way through the 1098/848 run and almost all replaced under warranty.
I commute on an '09 848 April to November. Keep meaning to get clutch slave and 14t but not so much that I got around to doing it this year. Always get to work with a smile on my face. I've kept my Honda as backup and winter/touring.
Thanks for the reassuring replies fellas. Ok decision made, let the hunt begin! I had my Triumph Daytona 675 stolen just before Christmas so once the Insurance comes through ill be buying my first Duke Thanks for the speedy help, much appreciated! Mark
I've also had two Daytona's either side of having the 848 Evo and now I have the 899, great bikes! Sound phenomenal
Ok all, The insurance has settled on the Daytona now so I'm starting to look seriously now. Is there anything I should look for specifically ? Any recall work? Common areas of trouble I should check? Thanks again all! Mark
