848 Feels Weird Engine Wise

  1. this is a strange one to explain but the last time I used my 848 was on a track day last month.
In the last session it felt like it was running on 1 and a half cylinders if that makes sense.
I was pretty knackered after the day and packed the bike up
Thinking maybe plug or coil pack.
I’ve just had a look and started it up, deffo running lumpy as hell but there is still adequate compression & combustion on both cylinders.
I swapped coil packs, plugs and injectors to eliminate these items. As the problem didn’t move from the rear cylinder I’m assuming the worst.
I ascertained it was the rear cylinder by my hercule poirot skills of listening with a screw driver wedged to my ear stephoscope styleee.

I appreciate this sounds weird but I know there’s a fault with my girl as we get to know how these bikes feel after hours in the saddle.
    She just feels unbalanced.
Maybe I should whip the head off and see.
Has anybody else had a similar feeling?
I appreciate it’s an odd one
    To explain and
    To put in to words.

To sum up. Still has compression equal to front cylinder so I would say valvetrain is fine. Spark is fine, plug and coil pack all good.
The frame feels like it’s wobbly at 5000 rpm. Much how I imagine a vibrator feels :kissing:
    Cheers

  2. May be worth whipping side cover off, make sure alternator nut hasn't wound off or signs of crank problem. Also, if you have crash protection especially check engine bolts as they may have become a little lose through vibes. I'd do that fist lol

  3. That’s a very good idea mate! The alternator nuts used to come undone on earlier Ducati’s I think?
Will have a look at that this afternoon.
It feels like riding a rampant rabbit at 100mph but without the smiles

  4. Mystery solved...
So after a little stripping session on the ol girl it didn’t take too long to come across this little nugget of evidence.
Rear cylinder piston skirt seems to have disappeared...
Looks like it cracked off. No signs of partial seize.
That will explain the imbalance. The barrel looks to be in ok condition.
    Bugger

  7. Due to the unforeseen death of my 848 pistons im thinking about making it in to a 1040.
I've read about these in America. did anyone try doing it here in the U.K.
Anybody tried this and what were your results ?
