848 Rear Sprocket

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by XxAnthxX, Apr 13, 2012.

  1. How freely and how much should an 848 rear sprocket float?

Just cleaning my chain and I noticed, what I think is too much free side to side movement.

    How much does yours move?

  2. I would have thought none...maybe i'm wrong

  3. I am wrong...aparently there allowed to move left and right to
allow for the swingarm flex.didnt have this on my VFR's so didnt
    realize this is the norn.

  4. I will check my 1098S tonight, but from my understanding, slight amount of movement is normal. From the bushes.

I have a renthal carrier on mine, so might differ, but I doubt it. The principle is still the same regarding the bushes.

  5. Thanks everyone,

Yeah I don't remember my vfr one moving, or my 848 to be honest, but from my homework it is supposed to float sideways, but I'm not happy with how freely and how much it seams to be. Maybe it's just me.

  6. It will be the stubs moving in the cush drive bushes I imagine - nothing to worry about, will just align with the chain..

  7. but there has to be a spec on how much I would think?
how would you know if a bush was cracked or worn.

  8. You would need to dissemble and inspect

  9. I seem to recall on the old' defunct site that this was discussed there. Also seem to remember that it was agreed a certain amount of movement was ok. I haven't tried to wiggle mine yet (matron!) but will try and remember to do so tomorrow if I get out to Box.

  10. Thanks, I'll probably strip it n have a look, tho I'm not sure exactly what im looking for :-(

  11. Just checked mine and indeed there is a little bit of play...you can hear a slight 'knock' as you move it from left to right. So small it's hardly noticeable but it is there. Mine is a 2010 evo with just over 3k on the clock. Having said that I'm sure my previous 848 2008 model was the same. I don't think it's anything to be concerned about, but the only other thing I'd suggest is have a word with your friendly neighbourhood specialist Ducati workshop.

Oh yeah...I have a Renthal carrier on mine too.

  12. Thanks Ken,

Yeah I have the slight knock when I move it, but the movement is definitely noticeable. Mines a 2010 pre evo, with the same milage, but the stock carrier.....

I'm convinced it's too much play now....I think.

  13. Ok...of course up to you what you do next, but if it was me I'd be inclined to get a professional opinion before doing any work on it. There again, my spannering ability struggles with opening the toolbox

  14. Yeah, it's probably a good idea.

I just don't want to have a disaster riding it somewhere to look at it, cause that is just my luck.

Oh ive got a tip for the toolbox issue by the way, I just leave mine open. :upyeah:

  15. Hi Anth,
Get my new one on Monday so I'll check the factory setting for you.

  16. Thanks Ian.

  17. Anth,
There's definitely 0.5~0.75mm float on it from the factory.

  18. Thanks Ian,

    That's what I thought....so that's it, it's coming off.

Now do I put it right, or do I go for a nice carrier and quick release sprocket?

    Recommendations and pictures anyone?

  19. 916 sprocket does the same, especially the Renthal carrier version - but then I believe it may be the same part?...
