Folks, what do you think? When you turn on the ignition all ok, then hit starter the "push button starter" turns over for split second then it stops, even when button still pressed in. After a couple of tries it then fires up. Odd. Basically the engine is almost firing then its like i take my finger off the starter button when i havent. Was out on it today and was fine I am suspecting weak battery as previous owner had it lying up for a yr or so. Its now been fully serviced. I only picked it up 2 weeks ago, but been busy until today. Going to deep test battery during week and see how it goes. cheers.
Sure sounds like a battery issue if its almost stopping. Another thing worth doing is installing upgraded cables from battery to solenoid, solenoid to starter motor and battery to earth. When I did mine (1098) 3 things I noticed 1) It was a bloody fiddly job to route the cable from solenoid to starter, but straightforward. 2) How small the area of the stock cables are 3) How much faster it now spins John
Hi folks.... tks for replies. u got the batt tested, seems ok. The bike ess lyimg uo for a while before u had bought it. Will monitor it over next while & update. May try methods above re wiring.
How was the battery They are notoriously difficult things to reliably check and rule out. The only ways that I know will tell you anything (and even then it will give duff results if its not done properly) would be to load test it or bung it into another similar sized bike. Batteries are so fickle they will charge up, tell you they are fine, then when you need them they just fall over, don't rely on an Optimate or the like or even a Voltage check to inform you of their health. Ducati also give the batteries a real hard life too. Ducati 748/749/916/999/996/848 starter & battery cable upgrade | eBay That's the flea bay link from where I got the cables, I think he's using speaker cable to make them up and a lot of solder, I would have preferred to see them crimped better but they do work and at 20 big ones won't break the bank. Be aware they are fiddly to fit and a real PIA at the battery as the 1098 (and I assume the 848) uses 90 degree terminals, so a bit of judicious bending is required, so you have been warned. All that said they do work, so you pays yer money and makes yer choice Good Luck John
Tks again lads. Just thought Id update. The bike has been starting fine, without even haveing it on optimate from one enfd of the week to the next. Must have been bacuase it was lying up, but its had a FULL service. Only one niggling problem. In traffic it will still cut out the odd time...thought that was only a triat of the 749 / 999 series.
bikes stood idle always seem to produce electrical gremlins - just about all of the 748/996 I have owned will get 'dancing tacho indicator' syndrome if left for around 6 months or more without a proper ride out (always goes away i'm glad to say).
