848 Steering Lock Stop " bent " or not ?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Dubs, Apr 26, 2013.

  1. Hi Folks

looking at an 848, but the guy who owns it had a left side slow low side ( He seems honest ) & dropped the bike. Replaced left mirror too and sidestand switch doesnt work.

I noted after test ride the left clip on ( handlebar) comes all the way to the tank...This is down to the fact the steering lock stop appears to be bent (?).

Have a look at the pic below.

Would you walk away from it ?

    Tks.

  2. Very hard to tell from that picture.

  3. what he said....................

  4. Walk away. Even if its just the steering stop you will always have it on your mind. You have to be 100% sure and I do not think you are. There are plenty of good bikes for sale, do not take a chance that you may later regret.

  5. Looks no different to mine. Possibly a bit shorter, hence why the clip on it touching the tank on full lock.

  6. Or the clip-on has been knocked round a bit............

I can't see much wrong with it, unless the curvy area just in front of the adjuster in the bottom of the yoke is actually a bend.....

  7. Tks for the feedback.

i think in gonna go for it. He said the off was very slow and dropped it in grass, replaced clutch lever & mirror.

If its a "lemon" (which i doubt) i'll take it on the chin.

@Arquebus i will check the clip on.

    Cheers all !!

  8. Dude, I had a lowside at about 4 mph and all it did was scuff fairing and move the clipon. Doubt the lockstop has been bent.

  9. even if it has you can adjust the screw that touches it.ie the screw you can see in the pic. is the paint cracked around it?

  10. I have a cat D 848 and the steering stop was bent,it turned out the top and bottom yolks were bent due to the impact, just be aware it takes a good hit to bend one of the stops.

  11. I wrote off a 1098 last year and never bent the lock stops, even though I broke the bottom yoke and even bent the front spindle so it does seem to take a lot to bend these.

  12. Hi i have a 1198 which i was rear ended at low speed, droped the bike on the right hand side and bent the steering stop, which straightened very easy, on talking to our local Ducati dealer his tech said they see loads of these and straighten nearley every one of them. Just make sure you center it up if you do it yourselve.
