Anyone got a bottom rad for an 899 in a draw/cupboard/box they want to sell? Just got back from holiday to find this on my floor
Mine did the same last year…. Tbh, I’d pull the pin and get a new one. They get battered and full of road debris. The lower rad does the hard work as it’s the only one cooled by the fan. I’ve seen a noticeable drop in running temps with a new one fitted and when the fan does cut in, temp falls quickly. I’ve had several Panigale in the shop with overheating issues and it’s been the lower rad. Even when the fan cuts in, the temp keeps rising as the fan can’t draw air thru all the shit in the core. If you do get a decent used one, take the time to give the core a good clean out and straighten any bent fins out… it’ll help a lot.
@nelly How many Wotsits is a new? I will be sitting down and away from all machinery & sharply bladed pointy articles when I read any replies
I can tell you tomorrow….. I know it’s all relative, but I don’t think they were “that” much, especially when compared to what people think used ones are worth on eBay
Anything with lower/upper radiator being so exposed to the elements definitely needs some protection. I personally would run a bike without one these days! Even if you just protect the lower one that suffers most of the damage. But for the small costs I would definitely do both! Especially with how easy they are to install on the 899.
But wouldn’t a rad guard lower slightly the air flow as your putting another obstacle in front of the rad? Albeit a mesh one.
I actually worked that out once........ yes, it blocks about 20% iirc. IMO, the damage that can be cause to the fins etc. is offset by this, but the key to keeping them working well is keeping them clean. Shine a bright light up the fan duct on yours and see how much light gets blocked when looking from the outside of the rad.
I’ll do the torch thing when I’m back home. Have walked off/away from the 899 in a sulk. Over 32 years of riding and it’s my first rad issue
