900ss 1997 End Cans

  1. My 97 Carby 900SS has Termignonis which I'm finding a bit loud in my old age.

What are my options for fitting something a bit quieter? I think the originals would have been A04 / B04 but I don't know what else will fit, whether 900ie cans will fit or what other possibilities there are.

I've subscribed to a premium account and will post a Wanted ad once I know what it is I want!

  2. I’ll swap you a standard set for your Termignoni if you like?

  3. regret the 900ie are different to your '97 (the inlet dia is the same it's the silencer part that's a lot fatter, not sure about the hanger arrangement) also you'll need to confirm if the carbs have been modified (jet kit? is airbox standard?) to suit the Termi's, if it has then it'll run poorly with standard silencers (if you can find them!)
maybe a pair of DB killers for the Termi's might help?

  6. Thanks. The original owner had K&N and a jet kit fitted along with the Termis, back in 1997. The guy I bought the bike from removed the K&N and put the air box back to standard, but I'm not sure what he did about the jet kit. Once the MOT is out of the way I'll see how it runs and then investigate the carbs if necessary. It starts OK and ticks over with standard cans (thank you @GDS968 ) but I haven't ridden it any distance.

It seems as though the MOT test is getting tougher on noisy exhausts. There's new wording now about aftermarket exhausts not being noticeably louder than originals (how do they tell without an original to compare with?) . The tester said the Ministry are getting more serious about it and Suffolk police are fining more people for having noisy pipes.

Fair play to him for finally spotting that the Termis have 'Race use only' stamped on them, the first person to notice in 25 years of tests. He did say that if there was nothing stamped on the pipes, the fail would become an advisory. Make of that what you will.

  7. ^ my MOT chap is strict but also sensible, if the cans are obviously not OE but unmarked he gives them an advisory, in as much that they were in his opinion louder than a standard silencer might be but not antisocially offensive.
    Best of luck with it!

  8. Well, there's a happy ending. It's passed the retest, and must be quiter because I managed to ride off and leave my ear plugs behind at the test centre and didn't notice until I got home.

  9. My bikes are loud, and I worry it may cause Mot problems, but maybe in Scotland they arent so strict as its been fine so far
