Hi, Got a small oil leak from the bottom of the alternator cover ( 94 900SS ), as it needs painting anyway, Ive took it off. Getting the side stand bracket bolts out was a battle, rounded out the allen head, so dremelled a slot across the head and battered it with an impact driver....no use broke the big flat bit!! Then got my stud extractor on the bolt head, that got them out no problem. So ive now got the Alt cover off and on the bench, bit of advice needed please... a/ Should the bearing in the cover have Greese in it? It does, but I dont think it should, is it not supposed to be lubed by the engine oil? b/ Any advice on prepping the cover and painting it black, eg is it worth taking the stator and wiring out? c/ Im planning on using threebond, rather than a gasket, any advise? Cheers, Billy
I wouldn't worry about a small amount of grease..............most bearings are packed with it....... I'm surprised it hasn't been washed out by hot engine oil though..... The stator bolts are torqued and Loctited so you may not want to remove it, but you can remove the knurled black cable grip, the grip olive/seal and thus the large nut (which is brass under the plating)...............that means you can tuck the wire inside with the stator.. You could then bolt the case to a piece of plywood with a soft plastic sheet in between, ram a cork into the hole where the bearing is; and either remove or cover up the gearchange oilseal. Whether you clean it all up by hand or get it blasted, it's your choice, as is whether you have it painted or powder coated (the latter will require the stator etc removed and plugged). ThreeBond is fine with no gasket apparently.............
Hi, ref the greese in the alt cover bearing, I think prev owner has mistakenly put it in. Ive washed it out with some paraffin. Ive got all the old paint of my self. Tried paint stripper...nitromoors...no use, apparently EU regs meant they had to change the formula. Dont buy its C**p. So i spent an hour our so with rotary wire brushes. Cheers, Billy
