got chatting to a fella about his ss which cuts down to one cylinder as soon as he slips it in to gear. starts ok will tick over all day long, engages a gear drops a cylinder? had one or two looking at it but no joy, a bit of a strange model seemingly only a hand full made? slightly detuned 83model? but having to fit 85parts because they cant be sourced? any thought before i go for a look?
Could you supply a bit more info Fin? I presume you're talking about a bevel 900SS? The SS was discontinued in 1982 but the 900S2 was produced for '83 and '84. By 1985 the only bevel model in production was the 1000S2 Mille, for that year only, and they are like hen's teeth.
not experienced with this model(most of them if truth be told). he appears to now his stuff bike wise but not mechanical minded.he was saying that it looks like s2 because of the parts fitted due to the lack of parts available, i will get some pics and more info. starts running on one cylinder when gear selected? it was his fathers and refuses to sell it.. cheers.
On these bikes a there are 2 independent Bosch electronic ignition systems, one for the vertical cylinder and one for the horizontal cylinder. The neutral light switch gets power from the fuse box and supplies it to the neutral light bulb when the switch is closed, i.e. in neutral. It may be that for some reason (a wiring fault or incorrect wiring?) one of the ignition units is getting it's power from the neutral light feed so that when a gear is selected the power goes.
You will find wiring diagrams here. The S2 isn't covered but the one for the SSD Darmah should be very close if not the same.
