900ss Removing The Starter Switch Unit From Top Yoke

  1. How do these come apart?

There are two conical shaped fixings on the underside, I don't know if these are the 'key' to how this is done?

The top yoke itself needs some drastic action to clean up, it has some horrible 'glue' blobs on the top, maybe datatag related before I owned the bike.

  2. The conical parts are the screw heads.A pair of pliers with a good "bite" and they should come out OK

  3. Tried that but it didn't feel right, felt like it was going to cause damage.

  4. Have you tried an allen key?
The hole at the top may be round but it may be hex shaped further down.
Can't get at my spare one in the garage at the minute to check.

  5. If no hex, Maybe tap a torx or spline bit into the hole, less damage than pliers and more likely to grip.

  6. The first thing I tried was different size allen keys, thinking "that looks like an allen bolt hole in there somewhere", but none seemed to find any purchase within. I'll have another try tomorrow in the daylight.

  7. I got one out by screwing in some theaded bar into the conical nut and then thightening a nut against the cone head and the putting another nut down after it and locking it then trying to undo it. I think I got one off like that but the other I had to mangle. I plan to put back stainless conical socket heads. I think they are a securing feature for the ignition.

    Cheers Gaz

  8. They look like security bolts to me - the type that has the head snap off at a certain torque. I would mangle both and replace them with something easier to deal with. The parts manual just shows an Allen screw/bolt.

  9. So I guess anyone who has wanted to refurbish their top yoke, has had to deal with this issue.

  10. I loosened mine off by knocking them around with a hammer and punch on the outside of the head at it's biggest diameter. Then replaced them with Allen socket heads.

  11. Mate, I just gripped them with pliers and they came out easy peasy. No problems...

  12. I screwed a long allen bolt with a nut on into it. Turn the allen bolt fully in. Then wind the nut down and lock it against the security bolt. Unscrew the allen bolt and the whole lot came out with surprising ease.

  13. Mine were in there good and tight.
I tried the bolt and locknut method, but no matter how tight I made the locknut the bolt still came out of the security screw before the screw came out of the Yoke.

I was about to get the welding gear out when I tried the hammer and punch.
I think as with a normal corroded in screw or bolt the shock helped.

    Nasher.
