My 900ss has just passed its MOT with an advisory note regarding play in the swinging arm bearings. The guy said it just needs shimming up. I intend to do it myself but am wondering if there any snags to watch for? TIA stu
Well loads really, the play you mention could be a host of problems regarding wear, for instance are the bearings whatever type they be from solid phosphor bronze or a later type needle style need to be assessed if they are in fit condition first as there is no point trying to mend knackered components, secondly the wear could have ovalised the pivot points and again this is not repairable. So when you say just needs shimming ask yourself if this is a fix for a worn swingarm, if you are quite happy about riding a machine with a serious problem then good, but Ducati when they built it did not put shims there and quite obviously for a good reason. Get it check by someone who knows about the swingarm and not by some MOT tester who frankly knows didly squat about your bike.
