916 Indicator Fuse Blowing Right Side Only

  1. Hello, in need of help please. Electrical problems not my favourite. Standard 1994 916, been having trouble starting from cold, - fitted new HT leads and spark plugs and got round to fitting the heavy duty battery and solenoid wires that I bought in 2010 after advice off the forum - still the same, then after repeated attempts the fuse on the Spyball alarm blew. Decided to remove the alarm - carefully unspliced the connections and put wires connected back as they were and she fired up 1st time! Tried about 10 times since and fired up and all lights including indicators worked. Last night pre-MOT check and blew the 7.5amp fuse only when turn switch for right indicators. Alarm wired into the indicators so assumed that the connection came lose - so battery out, unraveled the taped up wiring, my manual shows green and white wire is right side indicator - looked a good connection that I even soldered but cut the wires either end to re-do. Connected the battery with pair jump leads and fresh fuse but still the same even with the green/white wire cut the fuse blew. Spliced in temporarily piece wire connecting the green/white and tried again but the 7.5 amp fuse blew again. Ran out of 7.5 fuses and temp put in 15 amp - the right side indicators work but with the headlight-pilotlights and cluster lights on, they fade when right indicator flashes. I had jumped to the conclusion that the last thing that I did was to blame, but if so then why shoud the fuse still blow even when the green/white wire was cut?
Could it be just co-incidence. Does it point to some poor contact/connection between the indicator right side switch , or some connection block in the loom- it does work with the 15 amp fuse but I don't fancy running like that - advice would be appreciated.

  2. Check you negative connections two. In order to run one indicator warning light my ST4S has a strange set up with indicators which I can't explain

  3. Kozak, where to start? First question are you fitting a battery you bought in 2010? If so have you just filled it? If it has been sat filled since 2010 throw it away and get another one. A battery will last 7 years if maintained fully charged and used regularly but 7 years is pretty old for any lead acid battery. You need to check the security and cleanliness of the connections on your entire right side indicator circuit. I would suggest the alarm fuse was blowing for the same reason there is a short on the indicator side or at least a high resistance on one of the connectors. Pay careful attention to the circuit routing especially to the rear lights as that can get pinched under the seat, make sure you pull the indicator bulbs, test the circuit then disconnect the loom connectors and try the same. The circuit runs through the two main loom connectors both of these should be split and inspected carefully. First one is the round one under the front of the fuel tank RHS and the second is the big one under the front RHS of the tank. While you are down there pull the flasher unit and check it for clean/good contacts

  4. Worth a quick look at the bullet connectors from each indicator. Ones under seat are fairly reliable, but the ones from the fronts can come adrift and touch the headlight bowl and pop the fuse.

  5. Thanks for the quick replies. The battery is only one year old and holds charge well. I was mistaken in the description since just tried again and the right side indicators do not flash - can hear the relay clicking but no indicators and then the 15amp fuse blew. Will check out the wires to the front indicator since over the past month have had the tank off and airbox out at the time I could not pull apart the connectors to the right front indicator and at times the air-filter box would drop and hang by the wires and may have caused some damage to the wiring. Will check later tonight see if that is the problem.

  6. SORTED - thanks for the advice and encouragement. I was fed up and about to give up and hand it over tp the garage to sort but - removing the front right indicator and the 2 wires inside had been pulled back and come off the connections and were touching each other - so when right indicator on instead of the current going through the bulb live straight to earth and blowing the fuse. Pulled back some more slack in the cable and refitted, fresh 7.5amp fuse and hey presto right side indicators flash and fuse intact. Thanks again. This forum helped me about 5 years ago when I was doing the valves and belts on my bike. IMG_20170816_243510902.jpg
