Does anyone know the different mirror finishes on 916's over the years ?. On the plain black plastic mirrors like fitted to a standard Biposto, I keep coming across some that have a very smooth almost glass like shiny finish but most seem to have very lightly textured finish. All are genuine mirrors I should add Anyone know ?. Cheers
Original mirrors were made by the FAR company but there are a lot of replicas about now, especially at the cheaper end of the market. If the mirror is not made by FAR then it will be probably be a replica of some sort. All black mirrors were textured on all the models I have come across and have worked on going back to 1997 and I doubt any pre '97 bikes were any different. Painted mirrors by the Ducati factory were originals just painted over the textured finish as far as I am aware, although I have come across ones that have been properly primed then painted but they could well have been done by someone else. Maybe someone can be more definitive. Far | Retrovisori / indicatori di direzione / accessori
As I said, all the mirrors are genuine "FAR" but I have one here that has a smooth as glass finish to the plastic. I guess it's possible that someone took the time to fine wet & dry it, then plastic polish it to a perfectly smooth finish but unlikely I woulda thought ?. Pictures below of said mirror. Every day is a school day
FAR also made the mirrors for the Cagiva Mito that had the same shape as the 916 (and were compatible) so that may be where those shiny ones have come from, or maybe someone has just polished their bike a bit too much?!
If your bike is pre 97 I can only imagine that very early mirrors were finished like that by FAR themselves as rubbing down and polishing it would be quite a difficult process . I have never seen any finished like that myself.
