916s 916sp or 916spa

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Bront, Jan 25, 2014.

  1. I am looking for a sister to go with Sophia, my 2000 996 SPS so that I have a decent stock of spares for her. I only ride Sophia on the track. Today I stumbled across a '95 916SP, or so the owner says. However it would appear that there is a bit of a story behind this bike.

The owner says that it came with a 955 engine that threw a rod and destroyed the cases so he fitted a 996 SPS engine.

He has a letter from Ducati saying that the bike is an 916SP but the race version.

It has the oil breather tank carbon under seat unit.

It already had the P8 ECU when it was 955, he just replaced the chip for an SPS one.

It has stock ali cans plus carbon Termi's. The pipes are 50mm however they don't look like the normal stainless ones as they are quite a dark silver and not the gold colour that the stainless normally goes. Probably came with the 996SPS engine.

On the coolant expansion bottle the electric unit attached to it is blue.

It has a plastic airbox and carbon front fender. Carbon number plate holder.

The frame has 2 sets of numbers stamped on the head stock, the usual one ZDM916S****** and then another underneath (like a new sentance if you know what I mean) DGM536190M.

First registered in '95 in South Africa.

Has the origional 3 spoke wheels but now has gold Mag Marchesini's.

Ohlins rear shock, Showas on the front.

    So what is she? 916 SP1 or 2, 916S or 916SPA?

Any pointers on what else I could check?

    Thanks

    Bront

  2. Bit more info, the 955 engine number was ZDM955W400517. Now from what I have managed to find on google this would suggest that it is 1 of only 54 916SPA's from AMA but that doesn't quite make sense as they were only in '96 I think.

    Help!!!!

  3. If you speak to Ducati UK they should be able to check it out for you.

  4. I'm in South Africa but plan to drop Ducati in Italy an email on Monday.

  5. When I bought my sps I went to see a few which incl an SP. In fact I saw a couple, but either they were post-delivery 955 or 916 road bikes. From what I remember, there were very few real 955 bikes and most if not all were for racing.

If its got am sps motor fitted tho, why go for what you have?

  6. I have an sp3 that is a 95 model, 96 I think for the spa, but all were racing bikes and mostly sold in the USA, from what I know only a couple were imported into the uk,

  7. Well it isn't in very good condition, been sat for atleast 2 years in a fairly damp garage but it is cheap :upyeah: and I wanted it for spares for Sophia. The fact that it has a SPS engine is even better as then I would have a spare engine. However once I started doing a bit of research I realized it maybe something a little special, maybe not. If it is an SPA then it was 1 of only 54 and there can't be many left.

Then there is the possibility that it was a works or other race teams bike and not an SPA. The second number on the frame must mean something.

Hmm, what has happenend to all the boffins on this site, I thought you guys would have figured this out already  Oh well I guess it is the weekend.

  8. '95 I thought was an SP2???

  10. Can you not pictures off it?
like detail pictures off the frame,i'm sure there are a few guys on here how will tell you by the picture what you have.

    henk!!!

  11. Does it have a plaque on the headstock?

  12. No plaque and it will be a while before I can get some photo's. Email set to Ducati so fingers crossed.

  13. So my phone just rang and I look at the number but I have no idea where +39 is. Answer it expecting a Nigerian scam or something only to find it is Ducati, Italy to tell me that the bike is a 916 Racing and can I send them pic's of it?

Wow, how's that for service? I didn't think I had given them my number but looking back, when I asked them, via their website contact page in 2010 for some info, I had given it then. Quite impressed that they still had it on record.

So as soon as I can get some pic's I will send to them and post here.

Well done Ducati, great service indeed.

  14. Oh dear. If you see some big guys carrying a big bad in dark glasses and slick hair, be ready for a horses head in the bed or give up the goods ;-)

  15. Good luck and keep us all posted!
Ducati Italy are very good and very efficient, Sofia is usually the young lady that calls you, and it helps she sounds very sexy!:upyeah:

  18. Looks like a sp model, does it have twin injectors per cylinder?

  19. This is a genuine 916 Racing. I think you already know that one you have there is a mixture of parts.
