916 94 916 Sale - Should I Buy?

  1. Hi, I've been looking for a nice 916 for a while, ideally wanting a good condition original 94.
    prices are crazy but I've found one- i think.

    they claim its a 1994 but I haven't seen proof of this. Its got custom decals/paint..its not got the original screen.
    The wheels have been sprayed adifferent t colour so will need to be refurbished.

    it has had a service about 9 months ago and been inspected by a ducati specialist. but I've not seen the report. ( claims the bike is very clean and never been dropped)

    15k miles

    I can see other 94 bikes, in the £8-12k range, but they seem to be alot more original.

    so, what would you put an approx value on it?
    how much could it cost to put it back to original?
    what questions could I ask the owner?

  3. My gut reaction is to walk away. Ducati Italy will confirm age from the VIN and engine number but that won’t guarantee the panels are original. The date stamp on the plastic will give you reassurance that the panels are from the period but nothing more. Owners do sometimes customise their bikes with a different paint job and decals but I have to ask why they did it because a common answer is that the bike had been dropped. The final sentence in your first post sums it up, I you want an original bike you are going to have to pay for it. A non original bike will just end up a money pit putting right. It’s an old adage but if it looks too good to be true, it most probably isn’t. I’m sure not the advice you were hoping for but caveat emptor. Andy

  5. If your looking for a good condition 94 and don’t want it to be a money pit; Walk away. Parts are today seriously money with a 94 stamp. “Varese money” I call it.

  6. Thanks for the quick response, I'm trying to find out more info, as i do believe you get what you pay for.
    my intentions are to have as original 916 as possible, even if I have to put some time and money into it. and I know finding 94 fairings etc could be difficult.
    how much do you think having other fairings (95 onward) would affect its price?

  7. Finding the right year parts in mint original condition is your first headache trap.

  8. It has a biposta rear subframe so more likely it is not the Strada it purports to be and the wheels look later than ‘94. To the purist or collector and if you are looking to retain value during your ownership, IMO, absolutely yes. Andy
     
  9. OK so making this back into an original 94 is gunna be hard to impossible,

    so I know how much a good paint job and original decals would cost, and how much wheel powder coating is, this would get it to looking like an original. what value would you put on the bike pictured. if I can get it cheap enough then I'm happy its not a complete original 94. and will still look good in the house.

Just looked on eBay and had to wipe my eyes I was crying with laughter at the number of dreamers :joy: Purely my opinion mind, a non totally original, early 916 with good history is going to be worth £5k maybe £6k, not the £8k and £9k people think their late 916’s are worth. For the one in your picture which I now notice has no tail tidy or rear indicators and if it is registered as a biposta, it will need pillion foot pegs and hangers for the MoT, £2.5k. Andy

  13. It’s gonna take £1500 to £2000 to put it straight. Don’t care what the seller says, first thing would be a full dealer major service with valve shim check so you are up to nearly the same cost as a kosher one. Buying is one thing, selling us entirely different ;) Andy
     
  14. This forum has been a mine of information and other people’s experience, you just need to get the right combination of key words to use the search function. Never be reluctant to ask a question, there are genuinely good people on here who live and breath Ducati and have experience from just about every era of bike. Andy

  15. I wish I could get one for in decent condition with history for 8k! if you see one please give me a shout lol.
    but seriously for the last 6 months I've been looking, and even the roughest (still fully working) are going for £5k plus With avg ones around 10k

    I'm open to any 916 just liked the idea of having one of the first. thats what brough my attention to this one.

    I appreciate all the help you guys are giving me, maybe I'll offer him 3k
     
  16. You’re probably right in terms of putting it back to stock, but if that 916 could be bought for anywhere near £2.5k, I’d be first in line!

  20. When you come to sell that bike you’ll get the same question and responses from prospective purchaser as you’re getting told on here now. Many will walk away because it hasn’t got original panels, will assume it’s been dropped, regardless of whether it has or hasn’t. You’ll spend a load to try snd make it ‘original’ but you’ll never achieve that as the parts just aren’t available so it simply will never be an original 1994 916.

    IMO you’re better off spending more on something that is original if you really want a ‘94 (or even 95) 916 but you’ll have to spend a lot. It’s debatable whether the Varese 916s are worth the premium being asked.

    I suppose what aim saying is you’re not getting what you want by buying that particular bike.

    If you’re not getting what you really want then you’d be better off moving your sights IMO and 996s still represent good value for money compared to 916s and 998s. 748s even more so and a 748 will still give you more than you can use power wise for the road anyway.

    Just my tuppence.
