996 Battery Voltage

  1. I am sure this might be covered elsewhere on here but did have a search!

I replaced the battery a couple of months ago as the old one would not hold a charge for more than a few days. Even when fully charged the voltage was rarely above 12v, usually about 11.5v and would drop lower with lights on or indicators. Occasionally might get 13.5 on a run. It would struggle to turn over after a short stop too.

I replaced it with a Motobatt and seemed fine to start with but now experiencing the same symptoms, voltage rarely above 12v, usually 11.5v.

I know the voltage should be around 12.7v at rest and up to 14v when running! Any ideas? Likely to be a problem with charging system?

  2. Sounds like a charging problem. There is a common fail on the connector between the alternator cables and reg/rec connector. Behind the battery tray, you'll find a connector with 3 yellow wires to it. Chances are this is dirty and most likely burnt out to some extent. Cut it out, get back to good cable and fix with bullet connectors. If the connector is good, then the reg/rec is probably shot

  3. Thanks, will have a check!
