996 belts/service advice!

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by sav996, Nov 25, 2012.

  1. Hey :)

My 996 Bip had a full rebuild at Riders Ducati ~2 years ago. Since then she's been fired up every so often and ridden about 5 times; nothing crazy, only a half hour here and there. I've yet to ride her 'in anger' ;-)
Prior to the rebuild (2010) the last service was 2009 and the last time the belts were changed was in 2006!!!!!!
Riders asked if I wanted the belts changed but I was convinced they were not very old so I [foolishly] said no.

My question is providing I let her fully warm up to operating temperature, will it be ok to ride her 'properly' or would you advise changing the belts and a service before hand? Since 2009 she's done 2,000 miles, and 10,000 miles since belts were last changed in 2006.

If I'm honest I'm a bit green to it all so any tips or advice on belts and tips on servicing with inconsistent mileage would be appreciated :)

    Thank you in advance everyone

    Martin.

  2. I would change them before you start it up again, not worth the risk and much to expencive if one fails.

  3. I understand..... Best to be on the safe side. I've emailed Riders for a quote for a service/belt change. Any ball park figure I'm gonna be paying? Christmas present to myself ;-)

  4. Do it yourself...........belts 90ish, oil 40. Riders will rob ya blind........................

  5. Realy depends on what you call a service, belts and oil+filter, two hours labour = :£250 ish only a guess. Then you could have the cams out and rockers checked, realy depends how far you want to go. Forget the last bit as I just noticed it was rebuilt so cams and rocker will be fine.

  6. I'm not too fussed about an 'official dealer stamp' in the book as I will never sell her after spending on the rebuild.
Hmmmm, do it myself is a good idea I guess! I have a Haynes and I'm sure father-in-law will want to help...

Thanks for your comments, one last thing, with the low mileage I'm racking up, would you just advise a simple 'once a year' service?? Keep it simple 'n all that?

  7. Change the oil and filter yourself every year, as for belts I have just done my own for the first time and its not so frightening but I do stick to the two year intervals as its not worth the risk, only my opinion as others will run them longer.

  10. Ok buddy cheers. Always sounded far too scary, but I'm open to trying :)

  11. Ok so I heard back off of Riders Ducati. WOW. They're recommending a 24 month service which includes belts. And are asking £762!!! Or £642 if I don't have the fork oil changed. Wow...

  12. You would not pay any more than that to get Coventry to do the work i believe.

  13. I'd defo get the belts changed out. Oil and filter and a fresh fuel filter. Dump any fuel that's left in as it's going to a bit stale by now. I'd change teh brake fluids as well. If it's done no mileage since the rebuild and everything was in order then, a bit of common sense should see you good to go for around half of a "full" service.

  14. Sorry Nelly i should have mentioned you as well.

That kind of price for a service would get the work done by any of the most reputable guys in the country, and some.

  15. No worries desmo :0)
