Hi guys, Trying an oil change for the first time. I have taken what I believe to be the pick up filter out but no filter, it was just a cover as below. How does the pick up filter come out?
This was on the filter, does it look like chrome and is it enough to worry about? The plug was totally clean.
Stick your finger in the hole and see if you can draw the filter out....... ....it happened on a friends SS IE.
Sump plug magnet had the finger nail clippings, just the one. According to Shazam on the US Ducati forum it's quite normal in small amounts. The shiny stuff on the filter, of which there was very little, was not magnetic as the sump plug would not pick it up. I'm guessing chrome but don't rally want to open her up as I'm not that technical. Yet.
Flaking Rockers - Particle Test - Ducati.ms - The Ultimate Ducati Forum I read this before buying my 916. Putting the flakes from the filter into some extracted battery (sulphuric) acid will turn chromium a dark purple colour and give off bubbles. This should help you determine how much your wallet needs to worry about flaking rockers without opening her up. How long since the last oil change?
They are so few and so small I don't know if it would work. Literally pin head size. Last service was belts, oil, filter and clutch slave cylinder in Sep 2013, 400 miles ago. It was serviced by the place I bought the bike from in November. I'm telling myself if they found evidence of flaking rockers during the service: A, they would have got the owner to have them repaired. Or B, not bought the bike off him.
Or C, buy it cheap because of the damage, not fix it and sell it on. I'd hope nowhere would try that though.
I like to think not. It was not some back street in the middle of a big city. Small independent. Can't imagine they would last long if they tried that.
You would hope not. The only way to know for certain is seeing the rockers. Mine has only done 8000 miles so not due another valve clearance for a while despite its age. That doesn't stop me having THE FEAR about what will be discovered during the first oil service since I bought it!!
