996 Rusty Fuel Tank

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by cookster, May 18, 2017.

  1. hi guys im changing the fuel filter on my 996sps and noticed the inside of the tank is quite rusty, what the best thing to do with it? is there anyone who can sort it?? cheers.

  2. Blast it and get it lined - but you could try cider vinegar if it's not too bad :)

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  3. Bit out of touch with the latest methods but the two-part sealant (POR 15) used to be the best. Depending how far gone it is , might be worth keeping a lookout for a good secondhand one? Not sure if that's a special one on your bike? I have a spare in the loft for my 996 and was gobsmacked to find how totally clean it is inside when I looked at it a week ago.

  4. trip to the local sand blaster by the looks of it chaps.

  5. Remove pump and assorted internal gubbins. Get acid out of a dead battery, dilute by at least 4 times, pour into tank and swill it around. the rust will disappear very quickly. Rinse with lots of fresh water. Leave to dry.
