Just bought a 2001 996S and was wondering if anyone here can help me list the differences between the various models - 996, 996S and 996SPS of the same era. I've read the 996S has the same engine as the SPS (123bhp) but with an updated 1.6M.B1 injector system. So does that mean that my 2001 996S is essentially the same as the SPS apart from the carbon airbox, front mudguard and SPS plate on the fork top yoke. Or are there more differences in the SPS engine internals vs the 2001 S engine - Ti conrods, lighter flywheel etc....
I remember asking the guys at JHP about 996S compared to SPS. They said the S certainly aint no SPS although ducati tried to say it was.Think as usual with ducati they threw what parts where available in the spares bin at the S models. Some got ti rods some didn't some got t1 cam and some didn't. I think the SPS had different crank cases, pankl ti rods(some earlier ones had pankl steels according to fallons book),lighter crank, flywheel, P8 ecu ie with sequential injectors not alternate, close ratio box etc etc etc. Im sure some more folks on here in the know can add to this thread.
No. As Matt says you may get lucky and have soke ti internals but having ridden an S and SPS back ti back they are very different beasts.
