998 carbon hugger mods ?

  1. Hi all , my "ducati performance" rear hugger seems to rub on my rear tyre even when the bike is on a rear paddock stand (so guessing it will be worse at speed) .
Am I right in thinking this is not an uncommon fault ? If so is there an easy fix/mod I can do before it wears through ?
It seems to rub were the indent is, any ideas ?

  2. Push something between the tyre and the hugger giving the hugger a clearance position. Then gently warm up the hugger with a hot air gun (slowly mind) in the areas the look like affecting its position. Leave to cool overnight then take out the spacer device. It should now be set to its clearance position.

  3. I hadn't thought of that, sounds like a good plan to me.Thanks

  4. Check the eccentric hub is in the right location. When viewed from the LHS the spindle should be below the centre line of the hub. It's been adjusted incorrectly the tyre will rub and the ride height will be out.

  5. As above and also if you have changed the sprockets even if the spindle is in the lower half as it should be it could be forward bigger sprockets have the effect of shortening the chain. in other words if back sprocket is bigger you may need extra links to keep the spindle in the right position

  6. Cheers for all the info guys, I am running std 15/38 sprockets & 96 links and the hub is set correctly so looks like the wife's hair dryer is coming out to reshape the hugger.

  7. One last thing what size is your back tyre. If its a 190/55 change to a 190/50

  8. What utter rubbish! The 190/50 was fitted as a fashion statement by Ducati. so should I change my 195/65 Dunlop slicks for a 190/50 too? The 190/55 offers a far better profile and has no clearance problems once the hugger is re-set.

  9. TBH that's only going to give you marginal results if any. The epoxy resin in the carbon fibre is a thermosetting plastic and won't respond to treatment like that as an acrylic etc would.

Got any Meccano? Use a 'two hole' Meccano type plate where the hugger bolts to the swingarm just in front of the sprocket to effectively move the mounting point upwards by 5mm.
That should give you plenty of clearance.
