Afternoon all, Decided it was time the old girl went for her MOT so wheeled her out of the garage. Started sweet as a nut, with side stand down as Nelly kindly fitted the cut out mod a few years back. However, when she goes into gear, neutral light goes out and she cuts out. If in neutral then no issues, stand up or down runs fine. Clearly didn't like being moved into the daylight. Ideas where to start looking to fix please?
off top of head - sounds like sidestand switch or bypass in your case has stopped working. I can't remember 100% but I think s/stand switch relies on a completed circuit* (i.e. closed) for 'sidestand up' to be registered so could be light corrosion in any connector or open circuit in wiring on route from bypass preventing above.*
If this is a stupid answer I apologize in advance, you mention some sort of cut out mod for the side stand. As I recall with my 1098 you can do exactly what your doing but if you select a gear the bike will cut out as the side stand is down. Have you tried doing exactly what you have just done with the side stand retracted to see if it makes any difference? The other thing that can happen is if the bike had been washed before storage is the clutch plates stick together. Select a gear with the engine off pull in the clutch and try to rock or move the bike back or forward. If it rolls then its not that but if its reluctant to move, then its a distinct possibility. Simply take off the pressure plate and remove all the clutch plates with a magnet one at a time and don't mix them up. Clean them and put them back and its normally absolutely fine. That's all I can think of John
I appreciate the reply mate, I have tried it with side stand up and down, but no dice. She only came back from Cornerspeed a couple of weeks ago and I've not touched it since it was dropped off, other than another layer of wax. It will rock if in gear.
Yeah sounds like the bypass has failed, as Chris says it's just a loop of wire to always short out the connector. The standard/factory switched setup is sidestand down - open circuit (will cutout if put in gear) sidestand up - closed circuit (allows it to run in gear)
I thought they only came about on the later models, can't recall my 998 having any electrical connections on the clutch
The switch is usually disconnected (trace it up from the sidestand) and replaced with something like this midway ish up the frame downtube on the left hand side
plus if engine is cutting out when clutch lever operated then that means the switch is working?? i.e. it works in unison with (if fitted) sidestand and/or neutral switch.
There is no clutch cut out switch on a 998. It might be easier to remove the sidestand modification completely and then it might work. I have the same modification on my 998 which is just wiring based so it could be worth checking by removing the setup and just testing it to see if you can start the bike with the sidestand up and not in gear.
As per the above. I've just removed the bypass wiring and reverted to factory. However, this time it won't start at all, no matter where the stand is? So, reconnected the by pass and she starts, but once into gear dies .
hmm, was starting to think aftermarket alarm or something - came across this - do you think you have one of these fitted Archer? (post #6) :- 998s side stand switch? | Ducati Forum even if you have, it doesn't solve your problem. I couldn't find a standard bike with gear position inhibitor(linked to sidestand switch) fitted. If it is an aftermarket switch then it still needs a 'sidestand up' signal from sidestand switch (or as said - a 'closed circuit' signal).
I had this problem when the engagement lugs on the side stand switch had broken off preventing the switch from going from "down" to "up". Remove the 8mm bolt pull the switch off the stand pin and check it is moving correctly, there should be two metal tangs which engage in lugs on the side stand. As the side stand wears the movement on the mounting pin can force the lugs off centre and damage or break them. If this is the problem then you can leave the switch in the "up" position and stash it behind the fairing until you get a new one. They are quite expensive.
I think that the side stand switch can rotate, and therefore not work in eh correct position (sure that is the case with the 848; might be wrong. Rotate the switch fully in each direction and see if that works. If so, then you just need to find the sweet spot... Cheers, Bob
Chaps. Spot on with the side stand itself. Took it off this morning, WD40, refit and away she goes. Thanks all for their time.
