998r Compression Ring Removal

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by motecben, Aug 16, 2017.

  1. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to remove old compression rings from the top of 998R cylinders without damaging the surrounds? Thanks

  2. You mean on the piston?
Normally can be removed by simply prising apart at end with fingers then lifting out one end and hooking over the crown, followed by SRG of twisting, turning the remaining bit out of the groove.
    Would that work?

  3. Use a thick(ish) feeler gauge, slide under and work around the piston whilst gently pulling the ring away from the groove.

  4. Sorry. I mean the compression ring that is filled with Nitrogen and is used instead of a head gasket. It is compressed when the head nuts are tightened to fill a groove in the barrel top surface and seal against the cylinder head.

  5. OK I have no idea then, I didn't even know such a thing existed.
