999 - crappy hot starting

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by gliddofglood, Aug 17, 2013.

  1. Seems to have become a bit of a bugger to start from hot, i.e., you wouldn't want to turn off the engine at a long traffic light. You'd be unlikely to get the thing going again when the light went green. Sometimes it has to have 3 or 4 attempts. Battery is now brand spankers - so it can't be that. Last had a service 1 year and 5'000 kms ago, so due one. But what specifically will it get in a standard service that will cure this new problem?

Why is hot starting different to cold starting? Please explain, technical people. Thanks.

  2. As a fellow 999 owner here are my thoughts

Iridium plugs - get rid of them and fit stock
Relays - If you don't know when they were last changed then change them, particularly the injector/fuel pump one. Whilst you're in there move it from the below the starter solenoid to the top left of the battery box (there's even a square rubber holder for it to go in). They cost £1.90 on eBay.
Corrosion - check the right angled battery connectors for corrosion. Clean them up and stick di-electric grease on them (grease up the relays as well)
Earthing - run an auxillary earth lead from the -ve terminal of the battery to the starter motor bolt towards the middle of the engine (the starter is held in place by 3 bolts but only one is visible from the left side of the engine)

Forgot to add - TPS reset

  3. Many thanks. I shall impart that pearl of wisdom to the wizards who do the service.

  4. TPS reset will probably fix it though .

  5. Doesn't hurt to run some fuel system cleaner thru it as well. Plus change the fuel filter if it hasn't been done for 10-15,000Km

  6. What else do you need to tell them to do the service? Should they not be telling you? Just a thought!

  7. I'll mention the advice and hopefully it will all seem blindingly obvious to them.

The guy who used to own the garage (and is still there every day since his "retirement") sold it to his mechanics. They are good, but lack the legendary wizardry of the previous owner (his bikes won several Swiss Superbike championships for Ducati). Compared to most places, it is still excellent. Compared to what it was, it's a notch below. But I'm sure they'll sort it.
