999s - hottest cam I can get?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by lordmoonpie, Sep 16, 2012.

  1. I want to stick the hottest cam I can in a 999s engine. I've been recommended to use a 998s cam but don't know why...can anyone shed any light on this choice or tell me if there is a hotter cam still that I can safely install in the 999s engine? It'll be a full on race engine so the wilder the better! :upyeah:

  2. top tip, your'e going to need four..............

  3. Err thanks Andy but no I'm not

  4. hows that work then?

  5. you can put 749R or even the kit R cams in any testa motor. You will need to change the cam followers and possibly the valve guides tho. Would produce shedloads of power : )

  6. its not as simple as that .........

  7. One inlet one exhaust, what else do I need? ;-)

  8. Why not Andy? They're all very interchangeable on the testastrettas aren't they?

  9. well unless you are building a supermono then you do have two cylinders so 2 inlets 2 exhausts....=4

  10. Ask Jerry hes the RS expert......:tongue:

  11. What's the beef here then Jerry - Andy says you know all about it :)
I've got a 999s donor, it' going to have a stroke crank and custom pistons and rods and I'm hoping a certain lovely ducati dealer is going to find me some 998RS cams as of this afternoon....what else do I need to change? Would be very grateful for the advice :upyeah:

  12. No flies on you Andy - that's exactly what I'm building - losing the back cylinder...

  13. What you need is someone with a stroked custom piston 999 engine to tell you all about it..........

  14. Like Jerry huh?

  15. Possibly issues with clearances on the piston, so you wouldn't be able to run max compression, but beyond that, it's a cam.

You'd be better off with the whole head ideally. Cylinder studs, bearings are all in the right place....

  16. well er no..............more like me..

  17. hmm sounds good - tell me more then Andy, did you do all the work yourself? Did you get the heads flowed?

  18. no and yes

jeff Green built the engine:upyeah:..............now the bore piston rod crank combination..........now that would be telling.........CJS for the head work:biggrin:

  19. Bore piston rod combination is sorted thanks - just got to choose the cams then decide on head work...btw no I'm Simon, how do you do :)
I know Alistair of course but wanted to do my own thing rather than try and re-create what he's done. Got a vision you see and it's mine all mine LOL
