A Bit Off Topic....but Phones ??

  1. Morning all, my 6 year old HTC XE is giving up the ghost, so cutting a long story short, I won't buy Apple due to an argument some years back with customer service over an Ipod, so I'm down to a choice of 2. The HTC 10, or a Samsung Galaxy S7 ? Any thoughts from owners rather than somewhat biased net reviews ? Cheers in advance....

  2. Galaxy Note 7 should set your world on fire :D. Andy

  3. HTC are pretty good but the raft of top end phones are starting to become waterproof - which is brilliant....just out of curiosity whats making it give up....the reason i ask is that ive got an old Note 3 which ive removed the bootloader lock so i can reflash with custom software....end result: its razor fast, the battery lasts ages and i can upgrade to whatever version of Android that comes out....i keep thinking "i should really get a new phone" but mine works so well i cant see the point, apart from the waterproof statement i just made...ironically HTC offer a bootloader unlocking service...once the bootloader is unlocked its not too hard to reflash after that...

  4. If i was now looking at an Android phone id be going for the Google Pixel phone without a 2nd thought.

Pixel, Phone by Google – Made by Google

Best camera , unlimited (so better than anybody else) video & phone storage at full resolution with google photos and then it has the most up to date version of Android with zero fluff added to it.

The samsung is a nice phone but i don't like the added skin they insist on putting over the operating system (Touchwiz)

Had a HTC M7 for ages and loved it, still have it in fact but will be selling it in the next couple of weeks as i have the work phone Iphone 6

Id get the Pixel myself as its designed by google to work with google (android) and will therefore always get the best updates and software

  5. Yarp - which is what i run on my note 3 (android AOSP)....uses about half the foot print of the stock samsung software....on the plus side when you smash the screen on your iphone 6 theyre cheap and reasonably easy to replace...Just done one in about 20 mins earlier on..!

The only downside of googlephones is they never put in a memory card slot as they want you to use their cloud storage....which is shit. Ive got a ton of stuff on the memory card on my note3 and i can upgrade the storage if i want to...

  6. It's very slow and once you come off the net, the HTC fail screen comes up 8/10 times. I dont mind buying a new one to be honest, as its knocking on a bit, but am not really a phone person, so something with a bigger screen (I'm getting old (and blind)) thats got 4g and is a bit quicker would be ok, my HTC been reliable for 6 years so am leaning on that side more than the S7 which does not look as strongly built. The water proof thing does not bother me, as I dont really need my phone that desperately while in the shower, and touch wood, I aint dropped one in the bog yet :)

  7. Well, the waterproof thing was more if youre out on your bike and get caught in rain...i think it would be handy for that as if it was in my leathers it would get wet pretty quickly....

Cracking phones is fun...its nice to see what you can squeeze out of them....when you get your new one, format the old phone, send it to me, ill crack the booloader, flash it and send it back, you can keep it as a spare then...

Sounds like your current problem is just software, format the phone and i expect itll go....

Just refreshing my memory the xe is a sensation....just been off to have a look at whats available...yep - theres a latest asop build for it....as its an old phone there are software tools available to extend the onboard memory to allow for the newer android builds...so it can be done...

  8. I do appreciate the advice, but would rather a new one, as there are other issues too, small screen, slow processor, crap battery etc etc, will let you know what I get today or tomorrow.

PS, more than happy to send it to you, you can keep it though, do what you want with it.

  9. Cheers - my inner nerd is waiting...! thanks very much...as i say your more than welcome to have it back as a spare...

  10. Just off now to phone shop, once I'm back, PM me an address and I'll send it on, don't want it back though, cheers anyway.

  11. Job done, shiny new HTC 10, a few hours in, very impressed so far. Thanks all.

  12. My daughter has last years htc.... I was impressed with that... Moreso that she's not smashed the screen yet...
