Went for a ride on bank holiday on my 748, On the out ward journey things were ok but i did hear a pop from the exhaust and again about 100yard further on and all seemed ok, On the ride home after about 10 miles it started to hesitate and become a bit erratic, (it was likened to when i am on a two stroke and it fills like i need to go on reserve) on a country road and i new that when i have to stop at a junction it would stall and it did, took a couple of times to fire up but when trying to pull away it was hesitant with a cough and a splatter and trying to keep the revs up but the symptoms were the same but getting worse, i managed another mile pulled over for half an hour and tried to restart which it did but had to keep revving it to stop it stalling. I was out with a couple of other members from this forum and after taking the fairings off we couldn't see anything visual just a bit of coolant which looked like it came from over flow pipe, there was no leaks of coolant or oil anywhere. We set off with them following me behind but after 100yards it was the same, i kept the revs up but it was just hesitating and ready to stall again, just felt as if it was in need of fuel,(still makes the noise when ignition turned on for priming) So called the AA which was crap as first van turned up and said sorry i haven't got a remote for the trailer, second van sorry will take 45 mins to get trailer ready and i can't reverse with the trailer set up:Meh: so need it in a straight line on the road, which he couldn't do so 3rd time lucky a low loader picked me up. so not that great a day, Any pointers you might have are well appreciated,
Roadtrip, was it a hot day or were you in traffic when the fault first occurred, plus recently washed the bike maybe? Had a similar breakdown (mine only did it on hot days over 21c and did it a few times before it was diagnosed), it turned out to be the pressure sensor. Located just in front rhs of the fuel tank on the coolant header. The cable and connector have a rubber shroud that perishes allowing water into the sensor plug. Easy to see if there is moisture in there just pull the connector off, typically you find that two of the three pins are in a small puddle and the two pins closest to the ignition barrel have white corrosion on them. However these kind of break downs can be a number of issues and if you have a dealer nearby a sensor fault like this can usually be diagnosd by the ecu interrogation.
Good idea about washing the bike, when i do its just a damp cloth never use to much water, It was a warm day but wasn't in traffic and bike temperature was ok, i was out on the bike Saturday and did 12 miles without a problem, Will check battery and see what its doing, poss fuel filter last owner had bike 7 years and did 2k miles in that time and I've not put many on it in 8 months, cheers chaps
Regulator. Check voltage at idle up to 2000rpm. Should be around 13.5 to 14 v. If not, regulator isn't working. Could be the unit itself or the generator cables burnt out.
Could be several things of course, most of them mentioned above. Using a meter on battery should rule out regulator, the symptoms do remind me of split fuel line in tank.
Took the bike over to DJM(Dan) from this forum who was with me when it played up and spent a few evenings fixing it and giving it a bit of a service. Regulator was fine, took the tank off and out with the fuel pump and there was a split fuel pipe so new pipe, big o ring, fuel filter and quick release o rings, then pump refitted and she fired up Two new spark plugs, which replaced one Champion and one Ngk plug :Banghead:, Dan then got his gauges out for a balance up and adjust tick over and she's purring just fine now, Next job was quiet clutch mod (cheers for the plates 900streetfighter) which has made a big difference to the noise i can here the engine now, when we took the friction plates out and had a look at them they didn't have any grooves cut in them that you normally see between the raised areas just a continuous raised area around the plate, (hope that makes sense) anyone seen that before?
