Advice For Laying Up A Jil4 And Storing For Several Months

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Android853sp, Sep 20, 2021.

  1. Had the R6 serviced for a track day last year that was cancelled, so laid the bike up after draining the petrol tank and running the carburettors dry. The track day has been re-arranged for this October and shock horror (and panic), I have had to have the carburettors rebuilt to get the bike running again. I thought I’d done the right thing but clearly not and I don’t want to go through the same issue when the bike gets laid up until May next year after we get back from Almeria. Is there a sure fire, simple rule to follow that doesn’t require taking things apart and storing separately ? Andy

  2. I'm thinking of using this brand of Ethanol free fuel in a full tank for my overwintering, and possibly add add some fuel stabiliser just to be sure, perhaps Sta-bil, Sea Foam or Lucas Safe Guard? Then keep it topped-up.
I contacted them and they confirmed it should remain stable for up to 3 years.
You'll know about the uncertainties associated with starting the engine from time to time.

I hope I'm not going over what you've already considered, and that it helps.
    Good luck.

  3. use avgas

  4. The problem with premium fuels available at the pump, is that many are now E5, including some versions of the Esso Synergy Supreme Plus, depending on where it is sourced. Previously it was all free of Ethanol.

Avgas contains tetraethyl lead, as in the link below, but if that's not a problem it might be suitable.

  5. both of my bikes have been under cover since May, I always pump the gas out my tank as low as i can and put this in the car, as it will get used quickly, and then full up with fresh 102 from Aral, and close the tank.
a dash of fuel cleaner will help to absorb any moisture, not issues for the last 10 years or so doing this.
on return, same again- put into car/ sit on mower, replenish with a clean 10 ltrs and off we go.. no issues

  6. Collecting the bike this morning and will get a full explanation of what has been done. From an earlier conversation, I believe it was float bowls that were the prime suspect. I also know that the fuel tap in the tank is seized open, hence me draining the tank. I’ll let you know and get the promised manual across to you. Andy

  7. I've not knowingly used Aral Ultimate 102 petrol anywhere, and I'm not aware that it's available in the UK. I believe Aral is a German company that markets fuel, among other things, and has many filling stations in Germany. It appears their Ultimate 102 is a high octane Ethanol free fuel, perhaps similar to what Esso Synergy Supreme plus used to be, and so should be good for overwintering as described above. The following link has more information:

    Hope it helps.

  8. Carburettors full of muck and floats seized. Replaced all the worn bits and fitted new rubber seals and gaskets. Been advized to run on E5, use an additive and run periodically until the fans kick in. Not going to prevent this from happening again in the long term so going to look at sourcing a set of carbs and refurbish them ready to just swap over. Thank you all for your contributions.
