bought my multi 2003 1000 was part ex from northen island, no true milage, new clocks fitted, no old mots i took a punt looked tidy enough, i since done 5,000 miles toured wales and Scotland in last 2 years no real issues had new bushes in starter motor changed oil and filters ,still no spanner showing on clocks for a service, curently it dont idle bald tyre dead chain worn out pads , got big trip booked touring France this year should i change belts full service with tyre and brakes chain and how much am i looking at ?????????
From what you say, yes it is obviously overdue a full service, including desmo valve clearances. Heading for France without one would be v foolhardy. Can you do it yourself? If not, get your credit card out.
Any good with spanners yourself? You can cut costs by doing the belts yourself (plenty of useful info online, belts cost circa £100), oil and filters, brake and clutch fluids, etc. Get the valves checked by a pro (the big cost is in getting the bodywork off - any chance you can strip the bike and trailer it to a mechanic?). Plenty of cheap tyre and chain deals online. If you're getting all the work done at a dealers, get a quote first, and make sure they ring for confirmation before doing any extra work; prices can rise dramatically if mechanics are left to their own devices.
It's well worth checking the valve clearance as multistradas have big valves , but also check the valve guides as early bikes are prone guide failure . This tends to make the bike hard to start and have poor tick over .you say the starter has had new bushes which may indicate a problem with starting.
looks like its going to smash my credit card then !!!!!!!!!!!! think i might just part ex it on a tiger 800!!
