Always, always check...

  1. Just because someone has a qualification and say that they're an expert doesn't mean they're right.

The lawyer handling my fathers estate nearly made a mistake that would have cost us £100,000 in tax. They've done 'loads' of probate cases and have always used the same rule, which unfortunately was applied wrongly. Sounded wrong to me, so I googled and came up with advice from hmrc that showed that I was correct.

Sad thing is, the lawyer applied the rule wrongly in her own fathers case.

  2. Its a worry isn't it - the same in a lot of professions

Extra £100k to play with now :upyeah:

  3. Q - What is the definition of a professional ?
A - Just another as***le trying to pay the mortgage.

  4. So how much did you charge them for your advice?

  5. Expert = 'X' is an unknown quantity and 'spurt' is a drip under pressure.

Solicitors.....Huh!.......The number of times it has been necessary to take them to task is beyond a joke.......I reckon over half of them haven't got a bl**dy clue.

    AL.

  6. You employ experts to provide you with advice - but you still have to decide whether to follow the advice or not, and responsibility for that decision has to be your own. No getting around that!

  7. Well... If I get a guy to wire my house, I don't expect to have to check what he's been up to and then have only myself to blame when it short circuits.
I don't expect to have to check that the brakes have been put back on properly after a service, or look up in medical textbooks to see if I really have got a slipped disc. And if I'm paying the legal profession top dollar for advice, I don't expect, as a layman. to have to double check their work.

One of the points of paying people to do stuff is that they are supposed to know more about it than you do (unless you employ them as a short-cut because you don't have the time/can't be bothered to do it yourself).

  8. I would agree, G.o.d, in an ideal world where everyone is competent, honest and trustworthy. Your faith is most touching. Sadly, on this planet if you entrust your finances to an adviser without checking up on him, you'll end up broke; if you permit lawyers to handle your legal affairs unchecked, you'll end up in jail; and if you allow doctors to take medical decisions without reference to you, you'll end up dead. Many bike mechanics are very good, but few are so good that it isn't worth a double-check before you entrust your life to their handiwork - IMHO.

  9. .....and if you trust an 'expert' when he promises that the government will not let any more banks fail, only for the prick to then go and give all the assets in Abbey, A&L, and B&B (including MY SHARES!) to a Spanish bank to try and 'buy' support for his attempt to become European President, then you're probably British and the 'expert' was a Labour Prime Minister!!!

Bitter? Me? Of course I am .....

Back on subject: An 'expert' in tax law told my Bro in law he had to pay a £300k tax bill when he sold his business ..... luckily he sought a second opinion, and ended up living on the IOM but with a £30k tax bill !
