Another Newbie

  1. Hello,
My name is Andy and I live in West Cornwall, UK. I am just awaiting delivery of a low mileage Monster 1200. My previous bike was an Aprilia RSV1000 Factory.
I have a few questions. Are there any technical issues regarding the Monster 1200, any essential mods ?
Also, the one thing I hate about this Monster is the rear mudguard/number plate bracket.....can this be removed and a normal tail tidy/number plate bracket be fitted ?
    Thanks in advance

  5. Monster 1200 S or R?
There is the option of a tail tidy which eliminates the plate hanger and generally tidies up the area.
Thinking of doing this myself with the addition of bar end mirrors

    And welcome.

  6. Standard 1200, my budget wouldn’t go as far as the S or R

  7. Welcome Andy. I ha an 821 Monster and had a Ducati Performance tail tidy fitted by the dealer, it made a big difference aesthetically. Evotech also so a tail tidy for the 1200 Monster.

  8. Yeah it looks like the 2014 1200 has the same rear end as the 821. I might take a look at the evotech one….. anything is better than the original swingarm mounted one

  10. Evotech do a tail tidy. Mine has one fitted. Welcome to the forum.

  11. Hi Andy
Owners speak of the need for a throttle spacer modification being necessary but not sure if all models would benefit from this. I have no first-hand knowledge despite owning one, mine might have one already (I can't notice any lag in throttle response).

  12. Hi Chris,
This is the first bike I've owned with the Fly By Wire throttle.I do think I prefer a cable throttle as I find the FBW affair a bit vague. I've only ridden my Monster once, so it may just need getting used to, but it seems that nothing happens for the first few degrees of throttle grip rotation, then it kicks in. I tried both touring and sport modes, but no difference.

  13. Hi Andy, I think you are describing the very thing that the spacer can improve/remove. Hopefully others will reply with more knowledge of this.

  14. Fly by wire throttles have inbuilt slop to mimic a cable clutch. The throttle spacers take that movement out, it gives better feel so as soon as the throttle is twisted you get better response.

  15. Just googled them….. seem pretty popular

  16. the best value for money mod, one thing my throttle isn't is vague

  17. N.S.S. but was hoping for more specific help with the actual kit, where to buy it, how to fit it, "before and after" info from someone who has done this mod on a Monster with this "problem". :upyeah:

  18. You can get the spacers from a lot of sources, £40 down to £10 all do the same. Mine should be here in a few days..plenty videos on YouTube explains the process. Depends if you want the slop in the throttle or not. It just removes that 3 or 4mm of free play before you get an increase in revs.
