Went to the Ducati dealership I found in Carlisle to see if they had any relays I needed, none on the computer but said he had a 996 he was breaking in the back so got all the relays I needed (3) for £10. Said the 996 had "thrown a rod"?? or something so the engine was shot, said all the good bits had gone slipper clutch etc. Just wondered if there are any bits from the 996 that would fit my 748 once I get it back up and running! For example, I've heard there is less of a restriction in the 996 inlet manifolds than there is on the 748.
Hi. Yeah from what i remember the 748 had 44mm inlets due to a WSB restriction, where the 996 are 46mm. But the throttle bodies are the same 44mm below the butterfly so you would need the 996 ones too. But then there's the issue of if the 996 had single or twin injectors per cylinder. Grab a vernier gauge, measure what you got and compare. Only way to be sure really. I've got first hand experience of finding one part but needing 5 others to make it work so having the parts in front of you is a real bonus. But remember, to get the best from it you'd need it mapping to suit.
if you plan to keep your 748 for some time you could ask if he's removed the opening rockers yet as these (if not yet worn) are worth having as spares possibly for the future (current 'good' s/h price is around £30-40 each). have bought complete heads in the past just for the openers.
Thanks for the replies, I'm off to pick up a battery tomorrow so will ask if I can actually look at what is left of the 996. If I can get a good deal on the heads (if they are still there) I'll snap them up just in case I need bits.
